It adds a new "guest mode" (in addition to the normal "root mode") and a partial copy of the COP0 state for guest use, including a guest TLB which translates a GVA (guest virtual adrress) to a GPA (guest physical address). The root TLB translates the GPA to a RPA (root physical address). The root is in full control of what the guest is permitted to do, which allows a guest operating system to run unmodified and unaware that it is being virtualised.
