microMIPS is a 'compressed' MIPS ISA technology that allows both 16bit and 32bit instructions to be freely mixed without the need for a 'mode switch'. It is a fundamentally different approach to 16bit code compression than the previous MIPS16e ISA.

microMIPS retains 98% of performance of MIPS32, and achieves a 35% code size reduction.

microMIPS is defined in the MIPS/IMG document MD00690, and a usage guide is available in document MD00784.

microMIPS is available in the M14K and microAptiv cores from IMG/MIPS.
