Hi, All !

Trying to animate fresh 2.3.19 kernel (against 2.2.1) we detected
that kernel access to KSEG2 leads to various forms of kernel crash.

For instance,
        {
                unsigned char *p = vmalloc(16384);
                printk("before accessing vmalloc area\n");
                p[0] = 17;
                p[8192] = p[4096];
                printk("after accessing vmalloc area\n");
        }
never prints "after..."

User space, however, works fine !

It should mean that some high-level vmalloc
and low-level tlb/sys-access refill incompatibility occured.

Looking chenges I am impressed by changes in r2300_misc.S:

         mfc0    pte, CP0_BADVADDR; \
        _GET_CURRENT(ptr); \
        srl     pte, pte, 22; \
-       lw      ptr, THREAD_PGDIR(ptr); \
+       lw      ptr, TASK_MM(ptr); \
+       nop; \
+       lw      ptr, MM_PGD(ptr); \
        sll     pte, pte, 2; \
        addu    ptr, pte, ptr; \
        mfc0    pte, CP0_CONTEXT; \

It means that some terrible evolution has been occured in VM subsystem.

Looking changes at r4k_misc.S I see that it now defines NOTLB_OPTIMIZE,
that means (avoiding long sequence of association and logical consequences)
that we can spend a large time without key knowlege of changes in VM subsys.

So, have anybody some straightforward idea what we should check first ?

Regards,
Vladimir.

Hi,

One of the LinuxCE development team members (Steve Longerbeam) uncovered the
following Linux-MIPS kernel problem while trying to get the PCMCIA support
to work for MIPS-based CE devices:

The MIPS implementations of read[bwl] and write[bwl] add 0xa0000000 to the
address and should not, at least not in general.

readb, for example, is defined as (in include/asm-mips/io.h):
#define readb(addr) (*(volatile unsigned char *) (0xa0000000 + (unsigned
long)(addr)))

whereas it should be just:
#define readb(addr) (*(volatile unsigned char *) (unsigned long)(addr))

It looks like it adds in KSEG1 base to translate a physical address to a
virtual one, but my understanding of readb and friends is that they take a
virtual address as argument as returned by ioremap (which also adds in
KSEG1...). The comments in io.h about "SNI hacks" lead me to believe that
maybe there's more to this than just a bug, but still, if these are being
defined wrong for SNI's sake, shouldn't that be #ifdef'ed?

Or am I missing something?

 that is used to convert object code into prom file formats? "objcopy"
does something
close, but I couldn't find a prom output format.

This is a genuine linker bug which is rather difficult to fix. Also the
MIPS support for glib 2.1 isn't complete, somebody is working on it.

(Due to size constraints glibc 2.1 is a bad choice for most MIPS systems
anyway; the recommendation is to use glibc 2.0.)

Not #ifdef'ed but fixed for real. The SNI machine so far was the only
supported machine where we need these macros at all, so a hack was somewhat
acceptable.

Now that MIPS are an independent company, they keep a copy of the
assembler manual at:

  http://www.mips.com/publications/index.html

> MIPSpro N32 ABI Handbook, Literature number
> 007-2816-002

Look at:

  http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/

and search for "N32 ABI".

PS: for being helpful I earn a shameless plug; you might also find my
    book "See MIPS Run" (ISBN 1-55860-410-3) useful, since it has a
    lot about assembler programming of MIPS. You can buy it mail
    order from my firm Algorithmics at

       http://www.algor.co.uk/algor/info/seemipsrun.html

    or try Amazon UK:

I agree that there should be no shame. Every Linux/MIPS bibliography I've
seen lists this book *first*. If you don't have a copy of it, you are
working too hard. I daresay it has significantly advanced Linux/MIPS, even
if that was not one of its stated goals. Thank you, Dominic.

I go with that. While I haven't read the book myself the feedback from
various users and readers of the Linux/MIPS world all over the globe says
exactly this.

I had my Maxine running along happily with the framebuffer and accessbus,
and then I messed up the system trying to install some new RPMS. No
problem, I thought, I'll just netboot and uninstall the guilty RPMS.

Well, in the meantime, since I last netbooted, I've upgraded my Intel
Linux machine to RedHat 6.1, and I suspect there is an NFS root issue
here, because I've also heard about problems with NetBSD/pmax and
RedHat 6.1. Anyway, I've updated all my server files and exported
root filesystem according to the current version of Karel's installation
HOWTO. But now, when it comes time to mount the nfs root, I get the
following errors at the system console:

Looking up port of RPC 100003/2 on <server ipaddress>
Looking up port of RPS 100005/1 on <server ipaddress>
Root-NFS: Unable to get mountd port number from server, using default.
mount: RPC call returned error 146.
RPC: task of released request still queued
RPC: (task is on xport-pending)
Root-NFS: Server returned -146 while mounting /

An then I get a VFS panic.

On the server side, doing tail -f /var/log/messages, I see:

bootfile="/tftpboot/vmlinux.ecoff:
vendor magic field is 99.130.83.99 (note, this is not my ip address)
request message length = 364
extended reply, length = 364, options = 128
sending reply, with RFC1048 options

and that's it.

Has someone successfully used RedHat 6.1 as the NFS root server (surely!),
and if so, is there some clue as to what might be happening here?

Thanks in advance for any light shed.

As I'm currently DECstation-less :-), I was just wondering what is the
status of 2.3 from the CVS on them? as in when I retrieve my ds (after
xmas perhaps), what would be a kernel to start on? my 2.3.9 or from the
CVS?

Most important for you guys out there the upgrade to 2.3.21 and a number
of bug fixes. Try it, break it. Again ;-) Aside of this this kernel
also has a good part of the 64-bit stuff. Not all of it, I'm maintaining
the 32-bit kernel, the Indy 64-bit and the Origin kernel as separate
trees to prevent bugs from creeping from on tree in the other.

These days the DECstation support in CVS is supposed to be complete, so
I suggest to use CVS-current which at this time is 2.3.19.

Yes. We're just using NFS server from 5.2 :-). Kernel NFS seems to be
buggy and doesn't work reliably with diskless boxes.

The big difference between using NFS for root and for other filesystems
is that there is currencly no locking support for the root. Could this
explain your problem?

Perhaps, not. With kernel nfs, my diskless boxes work for a hour at
maximum and then stuck on a fs operation randomly. I observed this
behaviour after I installed RH6.0 on a server. Then, I just removed knfs
pakages and installed nfs from 5.2. Anyway, I prefer to not use
"standard" RH kernels and don't like to apply any patches to the
standard ones. So, knfs isn't a solution for me.

BTW, I can't get locking even with non-kernel NFS server from 5.2. I
mean at least I can't delete mail on a diskless client.

Regards,
Gleb.

knfsd in the standard kernel was broken over a long time. I think Alan
will fix them for 2.2.next or so.

Obvious, unfsd doesn't support locking.

I second that. There are two minor patches in the pipeline, one for R3000s and
one for little endian R4000 Sempahores. Unfortunately 2.3.21 appears to be
horribly unstable on my /260 and I'd like to fix that before I commit them.

2.3.19 is fine, on the other hand (besides the little endian R4000 semaphore
patch).

OK,

I found a Pentium 90 we had lying around, and put 5.2 on it.
Netbooting again, and my Maxine is alive.

	OK, after a bit of fallow time, I'm back to attempting to get
linux to work on the DDB Vrc5074 development board by NEC, which
contains a Vr5000, Mips IV processor. The working binutils have
linked things in the correct place (thanks), but I'm having other
problems now.

	I've configured it to treat it as an R5000 CPU, but it is
apparently not disabling translation and exceptions properly during
the beginning of the startup procedure, instead it is enabling
translation. It was working a couple of months ago, but either the
binutils fix or the cvs tree update broke the functionality.
Suggestions?

Did you uncomment the -N flag in arch/mips/Makefile? That causes that too.

http://oss.sgi.com/www.linux.sgi.com/mips/mips-howto.html

" 6.2 Self compiled kernels crash when booting.

When I build my own kernel, it crashes. On an Indy the crash message looks like
the following; the same problem hits other machines as well but may look
completely different.

 [...]

This problem is caused by a still unfixed bug in Binutils newer than version
2.7. As a workaround, change the following line in arch/mips/Makefile from:

   LINKFLAGS       = -static -N

to:

   LINKFLAGS       = -static"

BTW, little endian semaphores for R4xxx and TLB miss handlers for R3xxx are
broken in this snapshot. This is fixed since yesterday and 2.3.21 is happily
running on a /260 and a /133. If you want to play around with recent kernels I
suggest a fresh cvs checkout. Instructions can be found at the above URL.

Hope this helps.

Harald

I would like to seek help in creating a new MIPS port. I am creating a
new system called ATLAS and I have selected the MIPS 4700 series
processors. I have decided that a mainstream OS is required for ATLAS to
work. I have chosen linux because it is popular and I just like it. Any
help that could be offered on the software end would be
appreciated. There are some challenges due to the fact that ATLAS runs on
the theory that the kernel runs dedicated on one processor and gives work
to application processors (this allows for as many processors as there are
available slots). How this is a problem is with seperate processors the
kernel processor needs the OS, but the application processors need the OS
system call interface and various process management functions. At this
time in the ATLAS project the intent is to have the hardware created by
this summer, and I need to get the software done in the time before I am
able to get the hardware design tools.

kruger@inconnect.com

BTW: there is no hardware at all for ATLAS, devices as well as the main
system all need to finish being designed.

Hello:

I have 10 different Personal Iris machines ranging from a 4D/20 Entry to =
a 4D/35 with Turbo Graphics. I would love to help in the effort to port =
Linux to it. I haven't done much programming for years but am willing =
to pick it backup again. I would also love to help in testing aince I =
have so much of the old hardware and not many have Irix media. I do =
have 5.2 on a few disks (no media) and I do have 3.3.1 on tape. If I =
can be of any assistance at all, feel free to let me know. My =
programming experience was mainly with Cobol but I have heard C is =
pretty easy to pick up if you know Cobol so I am ready and willing and =
have the equipment gathering dust.

Let me know if you think I can be of any help

thanks
Chuck

P.S. I am in Guelph, Ontario, Canada and am a network administrator now =
and running NT and Linux (x86)

Since I read in a German magazine that Cassiopeia E105G will run with LINUX, I
asked Santa to get one. Fortunately he did. Although itīs Xmas I donīt love
Windows (95/98/CE I donīt mind). I normally work on a MacG4 and also have a SUSE
Linux 6.3 machine. But I have no idea how to put LX on my Cassiopeia. Do you
know?
Best Regards
Ronald Hofmann
