You should contact the maintainers of lena.fnet.fr for an account. Sorry,
don't have the address at hand. Luc? Stoned?

The Lance should be very easy to do. Take a look at the modifications I
did for the PCnet32, a PCI version of the Lance.

I'd recommend to make the box booting from a ramdisk first. If that is
working to full satisfaction you can go ahead and work on the device
drivers. If you're working on device drivers and the memory managment
stuff for netbooting at the same time you'll have much more trouble
debugging things.

Hello all,

although the code is still a mess you might want to download the latest
DECstation patches from:

        http://www.netcologne.de/~nc-koerfgha

I'm sorry but I do have only 1MB webspace available, so you have patch the
sources yourself. This is against Pauls linux-2.1.14.2.dec kernel.

Oh, before I forget, there is still a lot of work to be done in dec_irq_setup
and friends. This code will only work on kmins, maxines and maybe on 3max+.

Happy hacking.

Harald

Fine, patches applied cleanly and compiled out of the box !

The patch, a patched 2.1.14 source tree and a binary of the patched
kernel are now available at

http://decstation.unix-ag.org/kernels/linux-2.1.14-010298.dec.tar.gz (source)
http://decstation.unix-ag.org/kernels/patch-2.1.14.2.dec.2 (patch)
http://decstation.unix-ag.org/kernels/vmlinux-2.1.14-010298.gz (binary)

Please note that I didn't test the binary yet.

Congratulations! I'm very glad someone has had some time to work on
the MMU code.

I would suggest getting either the floppy or ethernet driver working,
as both of them will be modifications of the SPARC/Intel code (chips
are the same, but DMA method is different due to DECstation hardware).

Another alternative would be a RAMDISK image loaded via the boot prom
tftp call...

Paul

Just viewing your web site re: Linux. I know of an animation school in Los
Angeles that was donated seven or eight R3000 boxes and they're not sure what
to do with them. It's the Abram Friedman Occupational Center animation
program and the head guy is named Eric Huelsman. I think he might be
interested in information re: Linux for teaching/development at his school.
I'm using a guest account, so I don't have his e-mal handy. I'll have him
contact you.

FYI: I used to work for the Silicon Studio/Los Angeles Training Center (SGI
entertainment industry software training) in Santa Monica as their
government/education liaison. I'm now working as an independent digital
education consultant (whatever THAT is). I'll be at the LA/Orange County
Regional Multimedia Facutly meeting this coming Thursday -- are you interested
in hearing from educators on the use/development of Linux in their classrooms?

Thanks.

Hi Emmanuel,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but your message was
buried in my holiday email box!

That would be very good. What do I need to do? I would suggest a

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps I can port/compile/run some diagnostics for it?

Anyway, let me know if I can help...

Perhaps the message didn't get through to you ... I did some work to
set up a Decstation Linux dedicated website on
http://decstation.unix-ag.org
with all of Paul's old information and some new things (Harald's most recent
patch, some AccessBus information ...) ...

We have lots ;-) of www/ftp space available and a sufficiently fast net
connection (20 MBit).

	Michael Engel	(engel@unix-ag.uni-siegen.de)

Same result here on my 2100... as expected. The 2100 freaks out during the
memory sizing when unavailable memory is accessed.

It all looks really good in the new format! It would be nice if your
copyright notice at the bottom of the page acknowledged my original
source (only where it's used).

Cool! Are you happy to continue to keep the web pages up to date?
Sounds like we're going to have some good progress over the next few
months, if Harald keeps this up!

What are the various things to do in order to run Linux/MIPS on a DECStation 5000/120?
It looks like it doesn't work yet, but I don't understant exactly what is done, and
what is yet to be done. I have access to a DecStation 5000/120 with Ultrix installed
and a spare 600 megs disk, connected via ethernet to a intel linux box ready to
tftp/bootp/crosscompile... I've built gcc for ultrix and a few other things. but what
next? Paul Antoine said me to compile a kernel ; which sources should I use?

Thanks by advance

I think of this copyright only as preliminary, perhaps we should arrange
s.th. like "Copyright by the DECstation Linux porting project" or similar ...
I don't really _have_ to own the copyright on these pages ... Any ideas ?

Yep, I am !

More good things to come ... Harald and I have started working on a Turbo
Channel probing routine; I started with the Lance driver last night and
am trying to get the kernel running on the DS5000/200 and 2100/3100.

Well, I'm in the lucky situation of having some DECstations at home and
(finally) one 5000/200 dedicated for Linux hacking at university ... so I
can spend most of my spare time on hacking. Now, if I only had more spare
time instead of having to install a Windows NT PeeCee :-(.

Hi All,
there were some Problem problems in the SAVE_ALL and RESTORE_ALL macros,
but they are solved an the kernel boots as far as for the other DECstation
"Unfortunately" I'm in Englend at present, so I can send a patch not
befor next week.
The patch will also include a rudimentary console driver, so console_init
has not to be skipped any longer

Good idea... like you, I don't need to own the copyright either. Perhaps
we just need to acknowledge everybody that contributes.

Sounds great.

Oh I have one at home - it's just that with both a partner and a new house
to playt with, I don't find much time to do any hacking.

Fellow DECstation hackers,

I have totally reworked the dec_irq_setup and int-handler.S and (hopefully) the
periodic interrupts should now work on all DECstations. As usual a patch
against Pauls linux-2.14.2.dec source tree can be downloaded from:

        http://www.netcologne.de/~nc-koerfgha

I could test this only on a 5000/133 and a 5000/240, so please give it a try and
send the results (and patches, if any) either to me or to the list.

Enjoy!
---
regards,
Harald

... the patch, a patched kernel source tree and a binary image are now
also available on http://decstation.unix-ag.org

I'm trying to get the cross-development tools working on my i486 to
compile for my DECStation 5000/25, and I think i've got the right binutils
and gcc (mipsel-, right?), but where are the include files?

They're part of the libc package. Since people usually only crosscompile
kernels but not userland there is no need to install them.

Hrmm.. makes sense, but it sure looks like it wants stdio.h to compile the
kernel...

No kernel code should ever include kernel header files.

Hello,

I've been testing out these kernels as they pop out and I
must say it's good to see something happening again.

Now onto the problem I have.
Testing is on a Personal 5000/20 btw.

With Paul's 2.1.14 (from whenever he last released it) when the
system boot goes through the console detection phase I get.

-Registering Console.
-Got the following for the osconsole env variable: 3,3

and the system merrily continues on till it runs out of things that
have been written.

With the lastest test kernel (and the previous one) I get

-Got the following for the console env. variable: 1

And then complains it doesn't know what it should talk to and
I see no further messages.

So what got changed in the console detection between paul's latest and
the most recent version ???

I have a DECStation 5000/240 w/ a PMAG-D graphics board (3D no Z-Buffer =
- i860 co-processor on board). I'm looking into upgrading it to a =
5000/260 if I ever do anything with it. Right now the only OS I can find =
for it other than Ultrix ( -- spew -- ) is BSD (several flavors). I =
would be terribly interested in helping out in the testing of Linux for =
this box. At this point it has become a paper weight. I am not a skilled =
coder at all but I'm a very experienced beta tester of operating systems =
and I work with coders everyday so I can speak the language. I guess =
what I am saying is that if you need someone to test I'm your man. Let =
me know if there's anything I can do. I appreciate any opportunity to =
contribute.

Thanks,
	J

What are the recommended versions of the xdev tools to use ??

Any special patches required ??

I'm planning to build the xdev tools for an ultra,
so I'm building from source.

I assume you meant "No kernel code should ever include non kernel header
files" and I totally agree. Actually the DECstation kernel contains code
borrowed from milo and it looks like an #include <stdio.h> slipped into
the kernel. I'll fix this ASAP.

Well, this is my fault, I'm afraid. I am hacking a DECstation 5000/133
with serial console set. To keep the console detection code happy I
changed prom_getenv("osconsole") to prom_getenv("console") in
decststation.c. As a quick fix just change this back to
prom_getenv("osconsole"). I'll have a deeper look into that this
evening.

Harald

What about introducing a Patch level like in the m68k development
something like 2.1.14pl3 etc ... because i see a little bit chaos in
the patches ( haralds patches, haralds recent patches) etc ... :)

Ok, here's the patch. IMHO it's small enough to be posted here, hope you don't
mind.

Well, I'm officially bummed. My hopes were really up with the note about
"periodic interrupts", but for naught.

I tried the patch on my little DECsystem 5100, and here are the results:

1) The memory sizing routine is broken on this box. (You get a stack dump).
This isn't from the latest patch, but I needed to fix this in order to boot.)
I ended up having to hard-code my memory size, just as I did in Paul's last
tree. This _may_ be related to #3 below.

2) The 5100 returns "0" for the console environment variable, so I had to
modify the console detection code (easy change). I see that a new patch for
this code was just posted; I'll have to take a look at that.

3) The kernel gets as far as "Calculating delay loop" and then it sits
forever. I think what is happening is that the timer interrupt isn't. Sound
logical?

So I get as far as I did with Paul's last tree, but no further. Any hints on
what I might look at? I'm assuming that the interrupt vectors aren't being
set up right, or maybe the interrupts aren't being enabled?

Thanks!

Guys, you're seriously back in history by basing your work on 2.1.14.
I suggest to upgrade to Linux/MIPS latest and offer an account with
CVS access for doing so. Why? The MIPS code has dramatically improoved
since 2.1.14. Yes, there is even a commercial product based on a
backport of 2.1.56 back to 2.0.30 because the generic, _not_ the MIPS
code was limiting the kernel stability. Use that advantage. Aside
maintenance and staying uptodate with my / Linus' releases will be
a lot easier for you. And finally the DECstations sources in the
``official'' tree will become more meaningful that ``stubs'' that I've
recently deleted. Oh, and I'm under contract for a company to do the
R3000 stuff, so by using the CVS you're going to get that stuff for free.

Use GCC 2.7.2 and Binutils 2.8.1 plus the newest patches available on
ftp.linux.sgi.com.

Note: when using binutils 2.8.1 for building a 2.1.x kernel, remove the -N
linkerflag from the final kernel link. This is a workaround for a
unresolved linker bug.

Hmmm... Harald's clever code depends on being able to catch an
address/bus error when accessing memory that doesn't exist.
Otherwise, the prom code tries to query the boot prom. I'm assuming
neither of these methods works with the 5100.

Yes, check if it uses the 'osconsole' env. variable instead. Of
course, if your boot prom can store env. variables then you could
simply create one...

Nope - it's probably interrupting, but just going somewhere else.

Nope - hopefully just that the int is coming in on another priority...
I'd say that the hardware in the 5100 is different enough that it
routes timer interrupts to a different vector.

One way to check would be to twiddle the interrupt tables so that all
hardware int's point to the timer code. Then if you see the bogomips
appear you'll know that the timer itself is o.k.

You would then need to twiddle to code some more so that it will print
out which one got the timer interrupt, and hence you will know which
it's on for the 5100.

This all assumes that the timer is directly connected to a MIPs
interrupt, which is a reasonable first guess; otherwise it may be
connected through some hardware you have to turn on, and you'll have
to find docs to help with that.

Paul

Yes, you're right. I just wanted to come to the "unable to mount root"
message to learn what has to be done before upgrading. After this is
done, I already have started to reintegrate the DECstation stuff into
Linux/MIPS-2.1.72. I hope that's ok.

Thanks for the offer, this is definitely needed. On the other hand, I am
doing the work on the DECstation port in my free time at home and I
don't think that handling a remote CVS repository through a 33k modem
sounds like fun. Michael, do you see a chance to handle this?

I totally agree, this would avoid duplication of work. There is a
reasonable amount of R3000 specific stuff already working :-).

Hmmm, I've had little to no problems handing a moderately sized CVS
tree over a 33.6 modem. It isn't too bad since CVS just sends the
diffs in most cases.

I agree. I'm getting the XEmacs sources over CVS, and apart from the
initial checkout the updates are no problem. Use cvs -z9 at all times
and it's not bad at all (you then get compressed diffs). I'm on 64kbit
and not 33 though, but XEmacs isn't exactly small and there's a lot
of activity. Remote CVS is a fine thing, even over a slow link.
In fact, if I could get this laptop here to work as I want it then
the first thing I would do is to work with a remote 200 MB repository
over a 9.6 modem! I expect no problems, I just have to get the initial
checkout done by other means first.

Shouldn't be a problem, we have a 20 MBit link here. Sometimes it also
works ;-). Is there some kind of HOWTO that describe how to configure the
CVS access ?

We should have 2 GB disk space available and I can cross-compile on a
Pentium 60 with 64 MB RAM here ...

Hi,

Just wanted to let you all know that Cobalt has officially announced
it's Qube product which is based on Linux/MIPS. There's some information
on the product at out website: http://www.cobaltmicro.com/.

We've been running our mail and website off our product for quite a
while now without a hitch.

We'll be shipping a developer version of the product at a rather
agressive price point, which offers essentially a turnkey headless Linux
box in a cute little package. The install is basically a Redhat one.

And you'll be happy to know that much of the kernel work was done by the
infamous Ralf...

Please feel free to forward me any questions you might have. Of course,
what would a bunch of hackers do with a box like that? :-)

_Tim

There is going to be more commercial Linux/MIPS rsn. Linux will control
NMR systems, including medical systems and systems for long time measurements
where failure is no option. In those systems Linux will be the successor
of a modified Risc/OS 4.51 version. Stay tuned for details ...

You will have to talk to them. An NT installation media isn't sufficient.
Most probably you'll also need additional floppies containing the HAL etc.

The commercial thing isn't intended as a Linux distribution in the sense
as RedHat et al. are offering. It's a small, inexpensive and easy to
operate workgroup server.

That's yet another type of machine.  I've ported Linux to the SNI RM200C;
it should also run on the RM300. The R400 is a SMP machine and I don't
have any data about it at all. In fact, since so far nobody was so
generous to loan me a SMP box there isn't even MIPS SMP yet ...

But here is what _you_ can do: Call SNI and have a bit fun nervragging them
for Linux. There are so many very different MIPS machines out there that
reverse engineering isn't a real option unless you solve the problem of
human immortability before :-(

No, we don't use that feature on MIPS. It could be used for the
pagetables for kernel virtual memory - but we currently don't use it,
mainly because it would make flushing the TLB more complex because would
have to examine every entry before we might flush it. Basically it would
be a tradeoff between the costs of an increased number page faults for
pagetable entries for kernel virtual memory and the increased costs for
a more complex TLB flush routine. I haven't done detailed profiling on
that but my stomach says that trying to avoid the added complexity by
using the global bit is actually making things faster. I suppose this
would be different on the PPro.

There is another strategy which the MIPS port is using to avoid the cost
of having to flush and possibly reload the TLB entries on MIPS. On MIPS
each TLB entry has an additional 6 bit (R2000, R3000 series) / 8 bit
(R4000 and up) field that contains something called process id / address
space identifier. That field basicaly allows to tag TLB entries such
that there is in most cases no need to flush the entire TLB on context
switches.

With respect to the global bit in TLB entries this means that we may
have multiple entries for the same kernel virtual address in the TLB,
just with a different PID / ASID tag.

(PID / ASID is the same thing; it's just a different naming for the 32 bit
and 64 bit implementations of the MIPS architecture)

A feature we do use on MIPS is the KSEG0. KSEG0 ("Kernel SEGment 0") is
an area in the virtual address space at 0x80000000 of 512mb size which is
1:1 mapped to physical addresses from 0 upwards. KSEG0 is probably best
compared with the transparent translation registers of the 68030 with the
big difference that it cannot be disabled and the only thing that can be
configured for KSEG0 is the caching mode the CPU uses to access the main
memory. KSEG0 is actually a nice win because the topic of TLB faults for
kernel memory is non-issue on MIPS.

This might be interesting for some guys interested in porting Linux
to cheapo embedded MIPS CPUs. Linux still lacks the support for thingies
like the R4640 base / bounds register pair.

 Announcing The Linux/Microcontroller Project.

 Description:
Linux has been ported to 68000 processors _without_ Memory Management
Units. This is the first port of Linux that does not require an MMU.
The first platform supported is the 3Com PalmPilot or IBM Workpad with
a TRG SuperPilot memory card. Next to be supported will be the Motorola
MC68332 microcontroller, expected in the next few weeks.

 Why:
Linux for embedded systems is a great idea.

 Who and when:
Part of The Silver Hammer Group Ltd's programming team. Kenneth
Albanowski and D. Jeff Dionne produced a booting Linux kernel for the
PalmPilot during the week of Jan26 1998. Due to the structure of the
linux memory management code, the port to a flat contiguous vs. paged
virtual memory system went very smoothly.

 Status:
The kernel boots on a plain old 68000 CPU, TCP/IP and all, mounts a
ROMFS root filesystem and runs a special hand crafted /etc/init in user
space as well as a handful of kernel threads happily printing
 AAAAAABBBBBBBAAAAAABBBBB :-)

We are still working on libc, and the compiler support is still in flux. If
you are interested in Linux on small or embedded machines, visit the uClinux
home page at http://ryeham.ee.ryerson.ca/uClinux We even have a nifty
screen shot of Linux running on the PalmPilot simulator XCoPilot. Stop
 by and lend a hand.

 Contacting us:
We can be contacted about the Linux/Microcontroller project at
 uclinux@ryeham.ee.ryerson.ca

A friend of mine has a chance of getting a RM400 from work.
He's recently started working at Siemens Nixdorf in Norway.

He is wondering about the status of Linux support for these machines,
and how to help if needed.

The small brother RM200 is supported except X (and that I did not publish
everything yet ...) The RM400 shouldn't be too different, except if it's
a SMP machine. The SMP case is a bit more difficult - Alan says a week
or so ...

Thank you very much for the info.

I was told that the machine I mentioned only had one CPU, but that
could be wrong. Do you know if they are available in as non SMP also?

I'll relay the info.

Thanks again

Back again.

It turns out that the machine is an older version called RM400 model 5,
and has a R3000 CPU. Is this worth the trouble?

Thanks again.

Hello,

I try to use of Linux/MIPS on MIPS Magnum 4000 system.

I tried some versions kernel, and some configuration.

But, 2.1.XX kernel didn't show some message to console.
The 2.0.21 kernel could show message to console, but it didn't work
fine.

2.0.21 kernel stopped after ethernet information displaing,
and appear this message:

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 00000004, epc == ffffffff8005ac5c
$0: ........

MIPS Magnum 4000 system does not tested?

with best regards.

Tatsuya.

The development is actually being done by somebody who's using an OEM
version of the Magnum 4000, the Olivetti M700-10. But that machine is
99.9% identical.

Question: do you know if you have a Magnum 4000SC? The SC CPU version is
quite a bit faster but the support for it is broken in the kernels you've
tested.

What resolution is you machine running at? Milo and the kernel only support
the lowres mode (1024 x 768).

I got the ftp://ftp.linux.sgi.com/pub/test/vmlinux-magnum-971229.gz
file.
It was uploaded by Mr.Thomas, and he using this kernel on Olivetti
M700.

But, when I used this kernel, only appear the "Launching kernel..."
message.

My system is Magnum 4000SC-50.
R4000SC CPU does not supported?

ralf> What resolution is you machine running at? Milo and the kernel

Resolution setting is 1024x768.

I'm using Milo 0.27.1.
And milo show the "Launching Kernel...".
My system's setting is may be good.

with best regards.

Tatsuya.

In theory it should work, modulo the R4000SC bugs, see below.

Basically it is supported; it's just that the code for it is buggy. I've
made some fixes but I don't have the time to publish 'em.

Yes, seems to be so.

That definately means a hell lot of trouble. It's worth it if you are
a hacker from hell, if you eat kernel listings for breakfeast, drink

Hello all,
A suggestion box to port this to would be a Philips Velo 1.
It uses a 3.3V 32-Bit MIPS R3910 RISC processor @36MHz. It would
be a real challenge due to the fact that this is a diskless system
so Linux/X would have to be reduced to 8 Meg. Moreover, there is
only 4 Meg RAM (mine has 8 however). It would have to be installed
via a 8 Meg ROM "minicard" that is easily added to the palmtop
internally. I know this would introduce the problem of hardware
costs, but people have been buying CDs for years now. It is also
going to be a hassle during the porting process. :(

It should also be noted that the Velo 1 is in its declining
days. It will be replaced shortly with the Velo 500 model
(75MHz, 32-bit MIPS-based Philips PR31700 RISC processor) and is
expected to hit the marketplace in the March/April timeframe.
I request the Velo 1 port because I already own one.

I would be happy to assist in anyway that I could. I have
spent time hacking kernel and/or user code and enjoyed it. This
would present itself as an opportunity to learn something new.

Please free me from the grips of the evil WindowsCE.

You can do it yourself by mailing the "unsubscribe" command to
linux-mips-request@fnet.fr. That's actually the standard mechanism
for mailinglists, so I assume it's the first time you've been subscribed

We already have a website at http://decstation.unix-ag.org

I currently maintain these pages but am open to any suggestions how to
improve the server ...

Hi all,
now here is the patch for the DS3100/DS2100, so the patch is against
Pauls last Kernel and include all work of Harald. I have include a very
crude console code, only for the DS3100 but for the mono and color
framebuffer and any one who like to have a look should uncomment the
console_init statement in init/main.c.
Unfortunately I do not have any Webspace availible, so I will send the
patch to Martin, who (so I hope) will put the patch to the DECstation
Webpage.

best regards

Greetings,

At work, I have a number of 'old' decstation 5000/33 I can use.
For the moment, they run NetBSD/pmax or OpenBSD/pmax, but I would
like to give linux a try on (at least) one of them.
I've notifed that thereis some 'dec-station' stuff in the latest
2.1 kernels, but not much documentation.

Can somebody tell me the 'status' of linux on dec/pmax, and how
to install it on them.
(Acrording the (more general) linux/MIPS FAQ, is there a web-page
on linux-on-decstation on a site in Australia, but appears to be
gone!).
