Hi !

	I am Victor Marshall. I came accross the Linux MIPS homepage and
noticed that you are looking for folks with MIPS machines to test the code
on. Can you please send me more information about what that would entail?
Would I have to write formal reports about performance? Would I have to
come up with my own testing methodology? etc.

Thanks,
Victor

I own, among other things, a MIPS RISComputer RC3240 and a MIPS
RISCStation RS2030 (sans monitor, tho I know where to get one).

	They are, and have been for the last year, collecting dust. the RC3240
has 40 megs of ram and a 330 meg harddrive, the RS2030 has 12 megs of
ram and I believe a 140 meg harddrive.

	If someone in the US is seriously working on, or considering working on
the R3000 kernel port, I would be willing to loan either or both of the
systems, as they're doing no good to me other than sentimental value.
The RC3240 was my first unix, when I had a "borrowed" account on it at a
local university. Both systems appear to be in fine condition. The
RC3240 has a pair of 16 meg memory boards and one 8 meg memory board,
but I have unfortunately not been able to get all 3 of them working at
once. Both also have most of RISCos 4.52+ already on them. RC3240 also
has the obligatory tape drive.

	Anyone seriously interested should email me. They do have sentimental
value so I do eventually want them back, but neither has done anything
useful in about a year.

	I'm not really opposed to sending them out of the country except that
shipping costs would be signifigantly increased.

Hi,

Let me introduce myself on this mailing list.

I'm a French computer science graduate student working on clusters of
PCs using Linux as main OS. I work on this project with many other
developers worldwide and we are designing a high-bandwidth/low-latency
switched network which should allow us to connect up to 64 PCs on a
hypercube topology with almost the full 64-bit/66MHz PCI bandwidth.

Our PCs are using the 533MHz Digital Alpha CPU as main CPU. Our idea is
to use a dedicated I/O coprocessor which would run many I/O tasks as a
parallel file system or a distributed shared memory. We would like to
use one of the MIPS clones for it, for instance the IDT RM4700. It would
allow us to get a 64-bit I/O coprocessor, eventually runing under Linux
(others I/O coprocessors like the Intel i960 run on proprietary OS like
VxWorks...). But we need to get a full 64-bit Linux running on a RM4700
with eventually some real-time features.

Many embedded systems are using MIPS-like CPU. A good & free 64-bit OS
would be very useful for many other applications and would allow
developers to use them without having to pay highly expensive
development tools like those provided for the Intel i960.

Do you know when such a version of Linux could be available and are you
interested by this project? We should be able to provide a RM4700-based
board to any serious developer who could help us in this work. All of
our developments are made under the GPL.

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards (^_^)

Hello,

  I just inherited a Mips Magnum-4000 with the hopes of using it as a
Linux machine. I am a professional programmer who's speciality happens
to be OS internals (usually Windows NT lately). I'd like to contribute
to
the project. My hopes is to get this machine running with the on-board
peripherials as it has many extras built in.

  Could you point me to the latest information, list of people working
on Magnum ports, lists I should join, etc?

Thanks,

Bob

Hey !
I am Michael from Germany. I own a second hand DECStation 5000 /200
with storage extension ( 2 hd with 360 and 620 MB) , a 8bit graphics
frame buffer card and a dec 19 " color monitor
(unfortunately the previous owner configuered the Xws X driver for
monochrome graphics ... I suspect he had a greyscale monitor and the
color monitor was bundled by the guy who sold me the station ...)
I have compiled kernels on pc (x86) linux machines and I have even
succeded in compiling a new kernel with cc under ultrix on the dec
to be able to use an external cd rom...
I do not have a lot of experience with programming (and even less
time) but I would be willing to help with testing.
I have the small hradware doc from dec that came with the station
(on paper ..) but I do not have any ultrix doc...
The machine runs ultrix 4.3 rev 44 boots from a KNOZ-AA boot prom
Version 5.3t
The disks are 	rz1 - RZ 55
              	rz2 - RZ 56

I was just wondering if there were any compiled kernels for Linux/MIPS
available to download, or maybe a disk image I could rawrite to a floppy

It seems there's been very little traffic on this list lately; I suppose
school and work has us all busy.

Anyway, I'm about to acquire a second MIPS machine soon -- a NeTpower box
with an R4400 75mhz and some (apparently) custom boards - a SCSI
controller and a Prograph 1280 24-bit video card. The problem may be that
it will be difficult to find docs for the hardware. The video card
manufacturer was a company called MediaVision, which has gone out of
business (according to NeTpower tech support). If anyone knows anything

I am running the Linux 2.0.30 on my PC, an Intel Pentium 133 Mhz. I
am taking a course at University on the MIPS Architecture, we are studying
the MIPS assembly language. We are using a spim simulator at school under
Unix. We are also using the MS-Dos and Win ports of spim.
I was looking for a spim simulator running under linux (my favorite OS) and
I was very happy when I found it under
Linux/ALPHA/mips/crossdev/spim.bin.tgz - Sunsite.unc.edu.
It worked fine at the beginning when we were dealing only with integers and
working on the CPU registers, but I am having problems with reals.
In fact if I run the following program:

	.text
	.globl	main
main:	addi	$v0,$0,6	# v0 = 6 ready for read single
	syscall
	mfc1	$t0, $f12	# move content of f12 into t0
	.....	now I truncate the real number and I print the integer part.
	jr	$ra

If I run it at home using Linux and I print the content of f12 with print
I have always a zero in f12. By the way the result given by my program is always zero for any given input. The value of f12 never changes after the syscall.

Instead if I run it at school using the spim under the Sun SPARC it
works perfectly. There is something wrong in my opinion with the syscall
and the register in COPROCESSOR 1 that is suppose to contain the real in
input never gets it.
Also the version of spim I am using is very old (1992). Do you happen to
have a latest version.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Thanking you in advance,

It's also that the traffic of this small list has a bit moved to

If I remember right the SCSI of the box is the normal NCR SCSI 53C9x
hostadapter just like in the Mips Magnum 4000.

In fact there has even been worked on X support. We've got client libraries
(I did the work, lost it on a disk crash and Miguel reimplemented it ...
Thanks Miguel!)

DECstation ... Sorry, no progress. I was hoping to get a set of docs into
my fingers which would have got the DECstation guys back on the hacking
track but so far not success ...

Is it time to go look at NetBSD-pmax code? They seem to be MUCH
farther along on the DECstations. Could that be a partial substitute
for DEC documentation?

With certain limitations, yes. NetBSD does not support the entire line
of DEC machines.

Later in the kernel's life, is there planning on being any support for the
ISDN system on the DECStation/5000's motherboard?

I would personally like to see this happen, because a 25MHz machine might
not do much, but it could make a very nice router...

I'm probably going to buy this box, but since my family would prefer if I
didn't get yet another computer =), I'd like to let someone else have a
chance at it if he/she wants it more than I do.

A man named Gary Jesswein is selling his NeTpower 75mhz r4400 box -- $100
for the motherboard, SCSI card, and 24-bit video card; or, about $175 for
the motherboard, SCSI card, and 24-bit video card in the original case,
and a floppy and 2x SCSI cd-rom. (note, that was the deal Gary offered
me--$175 for the whole kaboodle with shipping included; he'll probably
offer the same to anyone else)

Please let me know if anyone wants this machine--if anyone does, I plan to
buy a Matrox card instead and work on the GGI project =).

Hi,

I have just aquired a DECStation 5000/133 and I would like to run linux
on it. I am interested in developing software for the system, but I need
a bit of help in getting it going. Here is the basic system as far as I
can work it out:

DECStation 5000/133
   - R3000 CPU
   - 32(?) MB RAM
   - SCSI HDD
   - Ethernet port (AUI)
   - External SCSI Port
   - 2 Other ports
   - 21" RGB Monitor

Storage Module
   - Tape Unit
   - SCSI HDD
   - 2 External SCSI Connectors

I would be interested in any help you could offer in getting it going, as
I would be interested in seeing linux on such a system.

Regards,
	Jonathon

So what is the kernel code and archive programs for and how are they used?
>From what I could find on the net, there seemed to be a degree of support,
not to a level similar to others, but still a usuable system. Is this not
the case? What about Paul(?) from Softway in Australia who was working on
the DECStations, is he still around?

Hi all,

I've uploaded new patches for the development tools to ftp.linux.sgi.com
and ftp.fnet.fr.

  - binutils-2.8.1-1
    This is the first Linux/MIPS version of the tools based on binutils
    2.8.1. The upgrade is mandatory if you want to be able to correctly
    build shared libraries. The old binutils 2.7 based linker had the
    bug that it would link the entire static libc into a shared library
    image when the library was linked against libc (-lc) resulting in a
    unuseable, huge shared library image and a large number of warnings.
  - gcc-2.7.2-7.diff.gz
    This release fixes a minor bug in the specs file. Older GCC versions
    were linking useless object files into all shared libraries resulting
    in slightly larger object files.

My name is Andrew O'Brien and I'm currently a fourth year student at the
University of New South Wales, Australia. Over the summer break, I'll be
working on a port of Linux to a (yet to be specifically decided) R4x00
architecture, with the ultimate aim of further porting the MIPS Linux
source to run within Mungi - a single address space operating system
running on top of the L4 microkernel. More details at:

http://www.cse.unsw.EDU.AU/docs/research/index.html if anyone is
interested.

If you could add me to this mailing list, that would be great, as I'm sure
I'll be making use of every resource I can lay my hands on in this
project. Hmmm - (badly ;) paid kernel hacking: what more could you ask for
? ;)

Thanks

Hello everybody!

Well, after 3 years of following the activities of the group, I have
to leave you all, because of lack of time to participate in the
project anymore. My good old RC3230 has now gone away to other
horizons...

Please, remove me from the list. The address I should be marked
with is: Gilles.Gravier@France.Sun.COM . I have now changed
location, so I'm not at the exact same address anymore.

Thanks again all for the fun 3 years of following the Linux/MIPS
project! Good hacking to you all! May the source be with you!

Gilles Gravier.

You should be able to unsubscribe from linux-mips by sending email
to linux-mips-request@fnet.fr, the list is served by smartlist.
Only subscription is handled by a human.

For rpm the trick is easy, just don't use a static linked binary.
Unfortunately the Redhat guys seem to think static binaries are a good
idea and install a static rpm by default. Which it is not, not even
without a buggy dynamic linker.

Ok. I stopped communicating with the Redhat guys shortly before I left the
US. Essentially they received a part of the patches that I don't classify
as ugly hacks or work in progress.

Some more packages like the binutils, gcc or libc are based on different
versions and we should try to base our work on the same versions as Redhat
does.

Thanks, I'll try to upload it as a single part later the day when
phone fees are reasonable insane[*]. So long if you want to rebuild
the package for the Indy, you can use the attached spec file and
patch (identical to the one on Linus) plus the binutils-2.8.1.tar.gz
file from Redhat's binutils-2.8.1-1 package.  (binutils-2.8.1.tar.gz
should be the FSF version.)

Hi,

I've found a problem with the cacheflush routines in the kernel. The
following routine from arch/mips/mm/r4xx0.c:

static void r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp(unsigned long addr)
{
	addr &= ~(dc_lsize - 1);
	/* These nops handle a processor errata in the R4600 silicon */
	__asm__ __volatile__("nop;nop;nop;nop");
	protected_writeback_dcache_line(addr);
	protected_writeback_dcache_line(addr + dc_lsize);
	protected_flush_icache_line(addr);
	protected_flush_icache_line(addr + dc_lsize);
}

which is being compiled into the following assembler code:

0000d5a0 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp> lui $v1,0x0
0000d5a4 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+4> lw $v1,12($v1)
0000d5a8 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+8> negu $v0,$v1
0000d5ac <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+c> and $a0,$a0,$v0
...
0000d5c0 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+20> cache Hit_Writeback_Inv_D,0($a0)
0000d5c4 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+24> addu $v1,$a0,$v1
0000d5c8 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+28> cache Hit_Writeback_Inv_D,0($v1)
0000d5cc <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+2c> cache Hit_Invalidate_I,0($a0)
0000d5d0 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+30> cache Hit_Invalidate_I,0($v1)
0000d5d4 <r4k_flush_cache_sigtramp+34> jr $ra
...

... is called by setup_frame() in arch/mips/kernel/signal.c when
setting up a signal frame:

[...]
	/*
	 * Set up the return code ...
	 *
	 *         .set    noreorder
	 *         addiu   sp,0x20
	 *         li      v0,__NR_sigreturn
	 *         syscall
	 *         .set    reorder
	 */
	__put_user(0x27bd0000 + scc_offset, &frame->code[0]);
	__put_user(0x24020000 + __NR_sigreturn, &frame->code[1]);
	__put_user(0x0000000c, &frame->code[2]);

	/*
	 * Flush caches so that the instructions will be correctly executed.
	 * (flush_cache_sigtramp is a function pointer)
	 */
	flush_cache_sigtramp((unsigned long) frame->code);
[...]

Unless I've got tomatoes of the size of a space ship on my eyes these
cache flushes do the right thing in order to guarantee the coherence
of Icache with the Dcache. Nevertheless when executing the code on a
R4600 v2.0 I get illegal instruction exceptions for the instructions
on the stack. The other MIPS processors seem not to have any problem
with this code.

Silicon problem? Anybody seen this before?

  Ralf

Static rpm 2.4.8 +fixes works
Dynamic 2.4.8 crashes on startup every time

No problem

Right now Ive got chunks of bastardised 4.8 (eg with -O not -O2 to avoid
gcc blowing up on zsh) but hopefully I can knock those out over time

Thanks.

I have just done that... so we will see if it works!

(I should not see this message in my mailbox).

Cheers,
Gilles.

A static RPM has saved my ass *many* times, and it would irresponsible
for us not to ship it static. Glibc ought to be able to generate
static binaries. If it can't, it's broken.

Hi there,

At school we have an ancient DECStation 5000/200, which is running
Ultrix. At the moment I'm the one to save the asses of the ones
responsible for the machine, and now I'd like to do that in style:
Linux!. Anyway, is there a kernel availlable for me to test?
If so, there is no floppydisk, so I'd like to use Either a SCSI-Jazz,
or an old RZ25 SCSI-disk that we can spare. Any tips would be
much appreciated.

I hope to hear from you.

I'm not arguing against static binaries because we've got a bug in the
libs.

 - static binaries contain syscalls and therefore make it very difficult,
   if not impossible to modify the kernel interfaces.

   The SVID btw., explicitly forbids embedding syscalls into ABI compliant
   binaries. While SVID compliance is not directly mandatory for Linux,
   binary compatibility issues with IRIX (or Solaris or ...) etc. might
   somewhen enforce modifications to the syscall interface resulting in
   broken static binaries.

 - many static binaries will use dlopen() to load _shared_ libraries under
   certain circumstances. Rpm is just one of them. For example try with
   your static rpm

     rm -f /lib/*.so*
     rpm --install ftp://ftp.whitehat.org/libc-2.0.5-.rpm

   Won't work, because you don't have your shared libc and libnss anymore ...
   I admit that this type of desaster recovery was nicer with Linux libc
   which doesn't do the dlopen() thing.

Yes, and the bugs have been fixed.

     This is a known R4600 Rev. 2.0 bug. From the R4600 errata list:

        3.  The CACHE instructions Hit_Writeback_Invalidate_D,
            Hit_Writeback_D, Hit_Invalidate_D, and
            Create_Dirty_Exclusive_D will only operate correctly if
            the internal data cache refill buffer is empty. These
            cache instructions should separated from any potential
            data cache miss by a load instruction to an uncached
            address to empty the response buffer.

A brute-force workaround for this is to do the load instruction to an
uncached address (such as a memory controller register) before the
cache invalidation code, and to also do such a load instruction just
before every eret.

     Alternately, one could put enough nop instructions in front of
every eret to allow time for the refill buffer to empty. The latter
is what I did on Indy, where 12 cycles are needed to allow the refill
buffer to empty in the worst case. I arranged to replace every eret
with a labelled jump to a patch area (with a nop in the jump delay
slot), where the patch area was 8 nop instructions and an eret. I had
a table of the jump addresses, and, at startup time on a CPU other
than an R4600 Rev. 2.0, I patched the jump instructions to eret
instructions, so only the R4600 Rev. 2.0 paid the penalty.

     Yet another alternative would be to disable interrupts around the
cacheops, probe the tlb to be sure a TLB miss could not occur
during the cacheop, pad 12 nop instructions after the probe,
do the cacheops, and enable interrupts. (If the TLB probe fails,
enable interrupts, do a load from the first address, and retry
from the beginning.)

   A static RPM has saved my ass *many* times, and it would
   irresponsible for us not to ship it static. Glibc ought to be able
   to generate static binaries. If it can't, it's broken.

That was a nice thing back in the pre-glibc days. But since so many
static binaries (including RPM) pull in the NIS stuff dynamically via
dlopen() due to how GLIBC works, your ass will no longer get saved the
way it used to.

At least you can install the packages though. At the very worst,
getpwnam() will fail and RPM will use root.root for all of the files,
but at least they will be there. That's surely better then not being
able to install packages at all.

I just checked mount(8), it's a shared binary. I guess only the fewest
Redhat installations it is possible to access the packages without using
nss services or mount.

Aside, if everything gets installed as root.root in absence of the nss
functionality this open a theoretical security problem for some packages.

If your system isn't working, security is probably the last thing on your
mind. RPM's --setugids option would close any resultant hole quite quickly
(rpm --setugids -a will reset the owner and group of all the RPM-owned
files on a systemm).

The -shared option not working is simply a bug.

 This is to announce that version 1.0 of DIPC (Distributed Inter-Process
Communication) for Linux is available now. DIPC is no longer considered
beta.

 DIPC can be used to build and program multi-computers, and provides
distributed program developers with semaphores, messages and transparent
distributed shared memory.

 The file dipc-1.0.tgz, containing the complete source code and documents,
can be obtained by anonymous ftp from sunsite.unc.edu, in /incoming/Linux, or
in /pub/Linux/system/network/distrib/dipc.

 Alternatively, it can be downloaded from DIPC's web page at
http://wallybox.cei.net/dipc

 Previous versions of DIPC are hereby declared obsolete.

 The contents of the dipc-1.0.lsm file follows:

Subject: Linux Port for DEC Station 3100 ?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi,

I read in the Linux/MIPS FAQ that the port for DEC Station 3100
is in progress. In our Labatory we have 4 DEC Stations 3100 and 2
DEC Stations 2100 currently running ULTRIX. We wan't to run Linux
on them if possible. Are the ports for those machines now done ?
Or could you give me the e-mail address of the guy, who is doing
the port so I can ask him myself ?

Thanks a lot.

Jochen

Hi,

libg++ is completly broken. Programs linked with it will die even before
the main function is reached. This probably means that the problem is
somewhere in the construcors run at initialization time. Can somebody
look into that?

Hi,

I promised somebody I'd use the time during the student strikes in Germany
to work on the NCR driver. Well, I lied - here is X windows instead :-)

The binaries are mostly packaged into rpm packages with the exception of
the XFree distribution itself which for now I'm providing as a tarball.
A patch to be applied to the XFree source distribution itself is included.
Right now the only X server included is Xnest; only little endian binaries
are included.

Given the short time invested into X and clients most things are untested.
Those things I actually have tested were working very reliable with the
exception of one program based libg++.

That's funny... I've been using C++ programs linked to libg++ since
august. Of course, I had to compile my own libg++, but it works... Which
version are you using?

Is mise le meas,

The RedHat package libg++-2.7.2.8-6.src.rpm. Builds out of the box.

If you have installed the little endian firmware then you can choose
"install Windooze NT" from the boot menu. The big endian firmware
obviously doesn't have this feature, it should tell something about Sinix,
SNI's UNIX.

In order to run Linux you must have the little endian firmware installed.
Also you must have two extra floppies with the HAL and driver in order to
install NT; the NT CD is not sufficient.
