Can anyone point me to the 2.1.43 kernel? I moved my Intel machine that
has I was cross-compiling on to my house, and now I can't find that
version of the kernel source anywhere.

BTW, my Magnum is now hosting it's own homepage, which I will update soon.

That's great! Is this the first Magnum PC-50 running Linux to host its own
website?

OK, prompted by this success (!?), I've finally gotten motivated to try
building my own kernel for my DECsystem 5100. As you all might remember,
Paul and I (actually Paul did all the work; I just tested his kernels!)
figured out back in May that this beast is, at least from a PROM standpoint,
pretty much like a 3100, so the calls to write to the 3100 console work on
this thing too. With Paul's last kernel, I get as far as the "Linux version
2.1.14 (paul@slither) ... " banner, and then it crashes.

Is the memory sizing routine the next thing that runs after that banner?

OK, so tonight I built a kernel of my own, using Paul's "linux-2.1.14.2.dec"
source tree. I had to create a couple links (one of which was quite odd,
and I can't figure out where it gets requested!), but after I did that the
"make vmlinux" went fine. I just now remembered the note on Paul's web page
that describes how to put the kernel in the correct format (using objcopy),
and once I did that it loads and gets me to the same point as Paul's kernel.

So where do I go next?

Hi Stu,
probably the only problem you have is that Paul did forget to copy the
execption handle to the correct location. There were some Mail's around
just after ther e release of Paul's "linux-2.1.14.2.dec" concerning that
topic. I do not have the source here but it was something like

  memcopy(KSEG0+0x80, execpt_vec0, 0x80);

just in the beginning of get_pmax_memorysize of arch/mips/dec/decstation.c.
May be you can find the original mail of Paul, or I will post the correct
statment tomorrow.

so long,

Frieder

The Magnums have been constructed as little endian boxes. Their
big endian support in the hardware is a bit hackish. When running
the Magnum big endian you either have the choice to run the box
slow or fast but with an incompatible disk format. The Mips guys
simply forgot the endian switch in the DMA logic, grmpf...
Also the big endian firmware is different and not currently suported.

Yes, with the exception of a few hardware dependand binaries. So
make that >95% of the binaries. Even the IRIX compatibility mode
would be working.

Hi Stu,
now
I'm at home an here is the correct line to insert in function
pmax_get_memory_size:

memcpy( (void *)(KSEG0+0x80), except_vec3_generic, 0x80);

Put that line just bevor the call to 'set_except_vector' and hoipefully
it will work out better than before!

Good luck

Frieder

OK. (Got your other message with the real statement.) Well, I'm
reinstalling the OS on my NFS server tonight, so unfortunately I can do any
recompiling right now :-( But I _did_ make much progress last night!

I ended up just hard-coding the memory size for my box (a whopping 8 meg!)
and then I pressed on. Couple other things I found:

1) In linux/arch/mips/dec/decstation.c, there is a call to prom_getenv to
get the console type. As is implied by the comment directly above, the
environment variable is different on the 5100 (and 2100/3100 too, I assume) -
it is "console" not "osconsole". This returns "0" on my box, so I modified
the if/then/else below to set serial console for this value.

2) Hmm. I guess this should have been 1, since it appears first - but I
think I found it second! Anyways, there is a call to register_console which
passed "rex_printf". This lead to an immediate core dump the first time
printk was called (at the end of boot.S). Once I changed this to prom_printf
I was rewarded with a bunch more of the boot sequence! Now I get to the
loop delay calibration, where the machine hangs.

Can anyone give me a quick explanation of how this routine works, and why
it _isn't_ working? I notice that just above there is a note requesting
that someone "write the time init code for the DECstation" -- is this why
it isn't working (because the clock interrupt isn't being serviced?)

This is fun!

The argument type of register_console has been changed some time ago.
The old arguement was a pointer to a routine which prints a \0 terminated
string. Newer kernels expect struct console * as argument. See
<linux/console.h> for the definition of the structure and some more
documentation about it's content.

Yes. This routine should initialize whatever timer is being used on a
particular machine.

You are up to the point where you need to get interrupts working, moer
specifically you need the timer interrupt working.

Good luck, you are getting closer.

Hi, I have a heap (12+) of UNIX kernel internal books, two books on
R2000/3000 assembler, two on UNIX device drivers and a 3100.
I used the MIPS simulator xspim in the RISC classes at university.
I want to contribute something to linux. Where/how can I start ?

On a separate note, we have one dead 3100 and one running Ultrix.
The dead one starts with

7..6..5..4..3..2..1..
??

>From what I can gather from the comp.unix.ultrix FAQ this is a SCSI
problem.
I've played with the termination, put the drive in another machine, etc.
I have yet to check cables and motherboard, is this definately a
SCSI problem ?

Linux Guru,

Hello there, I'm searching for some help. I'm a college student going to the
Richard Stockton College of NJ working on an independent study in network
security. I don't know a hellva lot but I have been running Linux Slackware
3 on a 486/33mhz for several months. I have the opertunity to take three or
so DEC 3100 workstations which currently have Ultrix on them and install
Linux on them for use with this project. I have read the info on your page
and the info on pauls Linux/MIPS DECStation porting page but I still have a
few questions...not sure if your willing to anwser them or now.

A few things I would like to know:
1)Is the kernel generally available (ie sunsite) supporting the ability to
compile on a DEC3100 workstation? If so I assume it's only the experimental
ones so far (2.1.x)?

2)I don't expect a complete explanation of this, but is it possible to
install linux on a DECStation over the network...i don't see any floppy
drives connected to them but i guess that i must assume they have external
ones hidding in a closet somewhere.

Any other info about Linux on a DEC3100 would be greatly apprecaited,
thanks...

Louis Seigal (louis@merchant.stockton.edu)

Hi all,

I've upgraded the modutils to 2.1.55. Since I've seen no ill effects
so far with modutils under Linux/MIPS I've sent the patches to
rth for inclusion in the standard package. Patches are in the CVS
archive on ftp.linux.sgi.com, as well as a source and little endian
binary package. I could not connect to fnet, so for now these files
will only be available on ftp.linux.sgi.com.

I am directing this to the list because the excellent FAQ is out of date
concerning Decstations (compared to the even more excellent DecStation
Porting home page at http://www.softway.com.au/people/paul/dec.) The
porting home page was last update 16th May 97, which appears to be out of
date compared to the latest images!

So, I ask the list the enclosed question about graphics on Decstation Linux.

I am working on getting a source of Decstation 5000s. Did you know that
Dec are taking 5000's as trade-in on Alphas... and then melting down the
5000s? C'est affreux, un disastre, on doit faire quelque chose (en fait
j'ai deja commence en parlant a maddog.)

Hi Dan,
I had a message to email or phone you... I seem to have misplaced your
phone number.... ????

However, I want an X server that will run on DECstations with Turbo Channel
TX and PX graphics cards. Ive spoken with "maddog" and he didnt think
there would be much hope...
Has the DECstation linux port made it to the turbo channel options yet?

If not, we have these remaining options:
o DEC fix their Ultrix Turbo Channel TX and PX X server
                (expect three month delay)
o Unigraphics modify their app so it doesnt crash the x-server
(not likely...theve already blown us off)
o Ask DEC to free up the source for their Ultrix Turbo Channel TX
and PX X-server (hahahaha) and then we fix it.
o Find an alternative R11v5 X-server for that hardware...

Have you any suggestions?

Thanks, Bevin

Hi all,

some notes about the interrupt handlers. The interrupt handling code we're
currently using is still mostly the first generation code. Weaknesses
of the old code include:

 - Examining the bits in a loop this hurts especially on the R4000/R4200/R4400
where each taken branch involves a two cycle penalty.
 - As a side effect of scanning in a loop we had a fixed priority. That
was ok for what the code was originally written for, but everybody
(including me ...) shamelessly copied the code without fixing that ever.
   fixing that ever.
 - As side effect of the way normal and "SA_INTERRUPT" interrupts were
being handled we had a extra indirection over a jump table.

Now after a little overhaul the interrupt handlers for the eval board I'm
just hacking is a lot faster and smaller; as a nice side effect they have
become _very_ trivial, too. The cleanup of the "fast" interrupts also
affected the generic part of the interrupt handling. I tried to do the
required modifications for the other systems code but without the hardware
at hand I of course could not test it. So please check the code for your
machine.

Hi all,

just a short note - yesterday Miguel managed to bring up SGI's X server
for IRIX running under Linux's binary compatibility stuff for the first
time. The code still has all sorts of bugs, but I thought it's a milestone
and I should drop a note to this list, too.

It just died! :)

OK.. here is the deal: My RC3230 just died... I can't boot it...
It doen't give any output on the console, and after some time
just sounds a brrrrweeeeep on the system speaker... And, I don't
have the time and/or money to get it fixed... So before I just
dump it in the trash I figured someone might want to grab it.

It's got 32MB of RAM in 1MB SIMMS, it's internal 600 MB disk, plus
an external (Sun) shoe-box with a 340 MB hard disk.

Either you are in Switzerland and can come and pick it up in Geneva,
or you are in France, in the Paris area, and I can bring it there,
as I drive to Paris every now and then.

Anyone interested?

Cheers,
Gilles.

I'm a researcher at Poitecnico di Torino, Italy. My main interests are in
digital microelectronics circuits, but I'm the system administrator of some
CAD labs, too, with a good knowledge of Unix tips an tricks.
I have to Sony Mips available connected to a local network with a Linux'ed PC,
so I'd like to port Linux on these Sony, too. As I read on the WEB there is
already a project of this kind, and I'd like to offer my help, if possible, for
development as for testing, in spare time of course. Let me know anything,
please.

Linux-Mips,

I would appreciate it greatly if you could anwser a few questions of mine.

I have three or so DEC3100 Machine available to me to use as I please. I'd
very much like to run Linux on these machines but I'm not really sure if I
can. They are all running ULTRIX currently.

1.) Can you run Linux on a DEC3100 machine?
2.) How does one initially install Linux onto an existing DEC3100 machine
via the network off of another DEC3100 machine?

Those are a few of the basic ones, would appreciate any assistance. The few
web pages about the DEC3100 port and MIPS aren't greatly understood by me.
I have run a Linux 486i system for a bit, I'm a student and i still have a
lot to learn.

Louis

Here is a preliminary task list of things that should be done for a
complete Linux/MIPS port, right now it includes by personal favorites
and I am working on some of those bits, but some of the other can be
done now, I have a copy of this at:

	http://www.nuclecu.unam.mx/~miguel/mips-task-list.txt

Priority:

[9] Get more userland programs compiled in RPM form

[9] Merging the latest GNU libc releases.

[9] Get the X libraries compiled.

[5] Getting SGI mouse to work.

[5] Test the STREAMS implementation of the mouse.

[6] Figure why init is setting the sigprocmask to a value different
from 0. This disables the debugger (SIGTRAP is disabled for
     all child processes).

[7] Getting IRIX X server to accept connections.

Please, send me additions to this list.
Miguel.

That's probably my part to do. I also have some yet unpublished
fixes for GNU libc. Add to this list that ld.so dumps core when
called as a program like used for ldd.

Howto updated so it show how to take a system currently running IRIX and
get it to a point where it is running Linux. I know it isn't truly
development work, but Ive been stuck with a non-functional Indy for most
of a month. My problems seem to be related to trying to NFS boot off of a
remote XFS file system but I could be wrong. I haven't grabbed the
latest kernel to try so that could resolve my issue.

This issues might have been resolved by Miguel's latest CVS commit.
Your NFS problems might also have been cause by the VFS rewrite which
was essentially turning the filesystems into an inferno for a limited
time.

Agreed. Im going to re-try boot later this afternoon with the new

The R4400 versions of the Indy have the "real" second level cache and
use a SC CPU version. Opposed to that the L2 cache of the R4600 and
R5000 Indies is controlled by external circuitry which needs special code.

Actually since we have the same problem on a couple of other machines,
SNI RM family one of them, what should be done is to break out all the
#ifugly'ed SGI bits and provide some hooks for them. You L2 less
machine would simply plug an empty function into these hooks.

Using r4k_flush_page_to_ram_d32i32 was definately wrong, the R4600
cache is two way set associative and flush_page_to_ram needs to take
care of that for all the R4600 and R5000 relatives.

Hi all,

glibc 2.0.4 contains a fatal bug. It does not declare a prototype for
the function llseek in unistd.h. As result GCC will (correctly) truncate
the 64 bit file offset and build erroneous filesystems when building
filesystems of 2GB. e2fsck will complain about read errors when trying
to read blocks from the 2GB border on. Actually I wonder why I never saw
a report about that on other mailinglists.

Quickfix: add the following prototype for llseek(2):

  extern loff_t llseek (int fd, loff_t offset, int whence);

I've mentioned this several times: llseek is an internal function.
What we need is the LFS interface which then defines lseek64.

I have cc'd in the Linux/MIPS mailing list, as this is probably the
best source of "deserving bodies" who might actually be able to do
something with it.

I would further qualify things by saying that I think a free box like
this should go to someone who is both capable of doing kernel work on
it, and has some time to devote to the project. I'd be happy if
someone on the mailing list knows someone like this who could be
brought into the project with the donation of this hardware.

The hardware is:

Well, things for R3k machines aren't as easy as they look. The key
thing for porting a operating system within a sane time is documentation
and I'd not wonder if that is no longer available. I sent a query
regarding documentation for these old machines, maybe somebody still
has some paper or files around.

Also SGI has it's own Linux mailing list for porting linux to their
machines. You as an SGI engineer can subscribe to the 'linux' list
by sending mail to majordomo@engr.

Hello again,

I haven't had time to spent in kernel hacking the last few month but
this week I got a 5000/240 and started playing around with this
thing. First result: This beast won't boot via tftp (broken PROM).
Now I have to find out how to convert the kernel image into a MOP
file and boot via mopd :-(.

Now the good news. By searching Digital's Web Site about Information
on this behaviour I stumbled across:

"The Design of the DEC 3000 AXP Systems, Two High-performance
Workstations" (http://www.digital.com/info/DTJ804/DTJ804PF.pdf).

In Chapter "6 I/O Subsystem" it says:

"[...]
I/O Module-IOCTL ASIC

A key I/O subsystem design decision was to reduce time-to-market by
eliminating unnecessary new hardware and software development. To
support most of the I/O functionality, the designers chose the IOCTL
ASIC developed for the DECstation 5000 Model 240.
[...]"

and to make things even better, these Alpha Workstations are pretty
well documented :-).

You may want to have a look at the "DEC 3000
300/400/500/600/700/800/900 AXP Models System Programmer's Manual"
available online at
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/dec-docs/ek-d3sys-pm.ps.gz.

>From what I have read so far, this I/O-Subsystem seems to be nearly
the same in all IOASIC DECstations, i.e. 5000/xx, 5000/1xx and
5000/240. There is hope!

may the source be with you

I had no linux kernel but tried to boot a netbsd kernel via tftp on
the same machine (5000/240). The Boot Prom told me that the normal
BSD Kernel was no ECOFF (a.out blafufasel) and the NFS Kernel
crashed after starting.

As i have an EProm Programmer i will have a look at the Proms. Somebody
opened one of those machines ? Std EProm or what kind of (NV)R[ao]m
is on the Mainboard ?

BTW: Could someone give me a small hint where to get newest Linux-Mips
development kernel and maybe a cross-compiler to develop on a different
linux-i386 box with the tftp server. BTW: I might put 1 or 2 Decstations
online for development for everyone ( 5000/240 and 5000/150 ). Maybe ill
develop a remote reset|power switch so that remote developers may reboot
the DecStation and have a Null-Modem cable to a serial port on an
development station.

If there is enough feedback ill try my best.

Yes, I have opened the box. The Prom is a standard 27c020 Eprom.

The latest DECstation kernel is available at

ftp.fnet.fr/pub/system/linux/Mips/ftp.softway.com.au/linux-2.1.14.2.dec.tar.gz.

IIRC the cross-development tools should be available somewhere in

/pub/system/linux/Mips/crossdev.

This sounds like fun. Especially the 5000/150 might be of interest, because it
has a 50 Mhz R4?00 daughterboard.

Yes, please.

Hello to all,
I too, like the several other people, want to help port Linux to
the older 2k and 3k systems BUT like all the others I am hindered by a
total LACK of documentation. I did manage to find one nice chap who gave
me some docco. but unfortuantely it was for the R4Ks, however...

Does ANYONE have ANY technical INFORMATION which might be of use
to all of us port of linux.

No matter how small, silly or whatever I'd like to hear about it.

Yours,
	Lucien

I assume you only refer to the system documentation. The CPU documentation
is available for free from {sgigate,www}.sgi.com and a couple of
Mips silicon manufacturers like {ftp,www}.idt.com and others more.

I asked some people at SGI and they'll try to dig out what still
exists. Somebody came up with a quite nice link for owners of
historic SGI machines. Check out the site, there is a link to it
on www.linux.sgi.com.

The Boot PROM doesn't know how to boot an a.out kernel image - it
needs ECOFF. The Linux/MIPS cross-development tools include the
ability to create an ECOFF image (or you should try the Linux/MIPS
test kernel mentioned in other email).

Sounds like a neat idea...

Some of us have been pretty busy in our real lives... my job as CEO of
this organisation has consumed up to 18 hours per day, 6 days a week,
over the last 8 months, which is simply *not* conducive to doing much
work on the port! :-(

I began another round of re-integration with what was then the main
tree, which is now out of date. I feel I should do that in order to
be able to hand it over cleanly.

No documents have come to light, though someone on the Linux/MIPS
mailing list mentioned that the Alpha AXP3000 uses the same ASIC as
the 5000/240, and is well-documented!

...and kicking!! Just *real* busy... I hope to have some holidays in
the latter half of October, and want to get the source together
properly then. I would be quite willing to hand over co-ordination of
the project to you (or anyone else!) if you'd like to do that and have
the time (I would still contribute of course!). In the meantime, look
at what's there and we can chat via email/mailing list.

Look for "The mips programmers refenence manual". (Faquar and Bunce ?) (
R2000 / R3000 )
"The MIPS RISC architecture". (Kane ?) ( mentions R4000 but contrates on
the R2000 / R3000 )
Both books were availible recently.
I have both books at home, (I do complete crap in windoze for a living),
also look at xspim and spim the
simulator for the R2000, R3000. Think it was on sunsite...

Hope this helps..

PS. Anyone got a spare motherboard for a DS3100 ?

I assume you only refer to the system documentation. The CPU
documentation
is available for free from {sgigate,www}.sgi.com and a couple of
Mips silicon manufacturers like {ftp,www}.idt.com and others more.

I asked some people at SGI and they'll try to dig out what still
exists. Somebody came up with a quite nice link for owners of
historic SGI machines. Check out the site, there is a link to it
on www.linux.sgi.com.

...I should probably say that I think this code is of dubious
parentage! It would probably be best for you to look closely at the
MMU code. I was only just getting my head around the R3K MMU when I
ran out of time to keep working on it, so I'd suggest you might even
want to throw it away and write it again!

Once the MMU code is up I'm expecting that we'll then spend most of
our time on device driver code (which is a bit easier!), so if you're
able to help here, Ralf, we should be able to move forward a lot
faster.

Paul

Hello,

I just rasn across our website for LINUX/MIPS.

I recently acquired a MIPS Magnum 4000SC-50.
The original NT install in all messed up. I am seriously thinking
of making it into a Linux machine, now that I have found your site.
I am just getting into this myself. I think your site is great,
and I would love to learn more about this project.

Thanks,

Yay! Yes, there was a spurt of good work in the first few months of
the year, when I integrated lots of code from various people, cleaned
up lots of other code, *and* wrote new code too!

I'm not sure - the TURBO-channel one I assume...

> What documentation is available at the moment? (Besides the ps docs at

Here is the email from Harald that mentions them:

"The Design of the DEC 3000 AXP Systems, Two High-performance
	Workstations" (http://www.digital.com/info/DTJ804/DTJ804PF.pdf).

In Chapter "6 I/O Subsystem" it says:

	"[...]
	I/O Module-IOCTL ASIC

A key I/O subsystem design decision was to reduce
time-to-market by eliminating unnecessary new hardware and
software development. To support most of the I/O
functionality, the designers chose the IOCTL ASIC developed
	for the DECstation 5000 Model 240. [...]"

and to make things even better, these Alpha Workstations are
	pretty well documented :-).

You may want to have a look at the "DEC 3000
	300/400/500/600/700/800/900 AXP Models System Programmer's
	Manual" available online at:

	  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/dec-docs/ek-d3sys-pm.ps.gz.

From what I have read so far, this I/O-Subsystem seems to be
nearly the same in all IOASIC DECstations, i.e. 5000/xx,
5000/1xx and 5000/240. There is hope!

I'd like to mention that due to popular demand (Some commercial embedded
projects just didn't choose Linux/MIPS because there was no "stable"
release 2.0 available) I'm working on backporting most of the MIPS
stuff implemented for 2.1.x back to 2.0.30+. I hope to get it stable
this week, at least that is the deadline I'm imposing on myself ...
That should also give you DECstation people some slowly moving source
base to start from.

Could you guys tell me, in which routine the kernel actually died? It
might be that I can fix things very easily.

Subscription is handled manually be me and a couple of other people.
Is it possible that you tried to subscribe to linux-mips@vger.rutgers.edu?
That's a Majordomo mailing list, but nobody is using that list. The
only actually active mailing lists are:

  - linux-mips@fnet.fr, (for subscription send mail to
    linux-mips-request@fnet.fr) or me.
  - linux@engr.sgi.com (for subscription send mail to majordomo@engr.sgi.com)
This list is primarily oriented towards _development_ of Linux for SGI
machines but also currently has the main traffic.

That move was back in '95, I can not imagine that that is the problem.
Whatever, Fritz, if you'd like me to (re-)subscribe you to linux-mips,
please drop me a mail.

Adam, I'm afraid I have to disappoint you. A small patch hasn't made
it into Paul's 2.1.14.2.dec Kernel and your BogoMIPS reading is by
factor of 1.5625 to high. Change HZ in include/asm-mips/param.h to 64
and you should get a "real BogoMIPS"(tm) reading of 24.97 (just
kidding ;-)).

This I/O Module-IOCTL ASIC is the glue logic, that holds the I/O
Subsystem together. *All* I/O Ports on the IOASIC DECstations
(5000/xx, 5000/1xx and 5000/2x0) are addressed through this ASIC and
it even supports DMA-Channels for the SCSI, Ethernet and Serial
Ports.

The Manual I've mentioned seems to be worth a look.

Keep hacking,
Harald

That's great.

> Could you guys tell me, in which routine the kernel actually died?

Well, yesterday evening I spent a few hours hacking my new 240
DECstation (39.85 "real BogoMIPS"(tm) BTW). This $=A7%&/=A7(/ Box can't
boot via tftp, so I had to choose the hard way: boot ultrix, download
new kernel, shutdown, boot new kernel via Ultrixboot, turn DECstation
off, turn DECstation on, boot ultrix ...

To make a long story short, I don't have the exact output at hand
here at work but the first debug output tells someting about:

[swapper 0] Illegal instruction at Address <somewhere>.

The instruction that causes this exception is:

> ...
>reload_pgd_entries:
>#endif /* CONF_DEBUG_TLB */
>
> /* Load missing pair of entries from the pgd and return. */
> mfc0 k1,CP0_CONTEXT

> mfc0 k1,CP0_EPC # get the return PC
> ...

in arch/mips/kernel/r2300_misc.S.

Hope this helps
Harald

Ok, I was suspecting something like that. That particular TLB exception
handler has to be pretty different from the R4000 version. It's
doing a very trivial piece of work. The only thing that makes it
a bit more complicated is the fact that the TLB exception handlers
have to be even more optimized than Microsoft's hype. In fact the
current handlers are all far to bulky.

I'm not shure which source tree you're using. Could you post the
TLB exception handler from that tree?

Hello,

We have some spare DECstations we'd like to set up on a small network
running Linux. What is the status of the port?

I am still hacking Paul's 2.1.14.2.dec kernel. After messing around with head.S
yesterday I restored to Paul's original head.S this evening and now I am getting
a different error message:

..
About to init memory

r illegal writeaccess to
00000822 (epc == 8003aab8, ra == 80070e54)

which makes a *little* bit more sense to me. Strange, even the smallest changes
seem to produce very different effects. Uhmmm... isn't that characteristic for
chaotical behaviour? ;-)

I don't want to bother this list with kBytes of listings. If you are really
interested in the version of head.S I am presently using, you can download
it from http://ww.netcologne.de/~nc-koerfgha/head.S.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, bug #1:

[...]
        lw k1, THREAD_PGDIR(k1)
        sll k0, k0, 2
        addu k1, k1, k0
        mfc0 k0, CP0_CONTEXT
        lw k1, (k1)
        srl k0, k0, 1
        and k0, k0, 0xffc
        addu k1, k1, k0
        lw k0, (k1)
[...]

Unlike the R4000 (64bit!) the R3000 context register refers to an array of
four byte entries. So you must delete the srl instruction.

> I don't want to bother this list with kBytes of listings. If you are really

Your handler seems to die in the second level exception handler.
However in buffer_init(), where the vmalloc'ed memory is being cleared,
the pages are always readable/writeable and therefore that handler should
never be reached. Note that the way that handler in head.S is implemented
the load in the handler should never cause a second fault.

Nevertheless, for your case the superfluous srl instruction shouldn't make
a difference. Note that the R3000 exception mechanism is a bit different
from the R4000, which means I'll have to read a bit ...

  Ralf
