Forgive me for sending dumb questions to this list every few days, but I'm
slowly working my way through my own ignorance =).

In my spare time I managed to port libg++ to the mipsel-linux target by
changing just a few lines of code, and I should be able to report whether
or not it works soon.

I finally got a working userland with the 2.1.43 kernel and the old
January, 96 root filesystem! (Yay!) I was able to create an ext2
filesystem on my SCSI disk and I'm about to try copying over the root FS
and booting directly from the hard disk, then I'll try updating with the
newer RPMs and stuff.

Thanks to all who have guided me towards this!

I recently got a DECstation 5000/240, [1] but I'm missing the breakout
cable to connect the keyboard and mouse. I've got the pinouts for the
DB15 connector on the workstation end, but don't have them for the
keyboard or mouse. The keyboard is an LK401 (with the 4-pin RJ-11C
connector) and the mouse is the ball-less kind which looks like a muffin.
(:

Also, I know that people are doing cross development on intel platforms,
but has anybody tried on an alpha? (I know that gcc has problems with
cross-compiling between machines with different int sizes, but it might be
worth a try, no?)

[1] I couldn't find much information on this workstation on the web
    anywhere... Is it a R3000 or R3400? Anybody know where to get RAM
    for it?

DECdirect will sell you the cable for $23 (part #17-02640-01)
I tried to make one up myself and did not have a lot of luck,
I can dig out the pinouts if you really want to try....

I have a functioning filesystem now, using the old root-0.01 with the
newer tar.gz files untarred on top of it--ie, glibc, fileutils, etc. But
mount refuses to behave correctly. Whenever I try to mount a filesystem,
be it ext2 or NFS, mount dies with a bus error. Can anyone tell me what's
going on with it?

How can you even boot if you can't mount the file systems?

Likely a mismatch between the mount binary and the kernel interface.
Beyond that, I can't say. Do you have sources that you can compile?

I have the same problem, and Ralf told me, that I need a new mount binary.
But I haven't compiled a new mount to see wether that's all I need.

I have the same problem (bus error) so we know it's not a hardware problem.

It is a time consuming process to create and modify this file system. Would it be
possible to create a rootdisk ala Slackware with a minimal system and a few utilities
on it? If we could fdisk, mount, tar, gunzip, etc it would be very handy for testing
purposes. I've read the bootdisk HOWTO but before I do this, has anyone else gone down
this path? I've not been successful in compiling a kernel with ramdisk support.

Which package is mount in? The filesystem got more stable after I installed some of
the mips.rpms, but then I installed some more and it got worse.

Thanks,
Charles

Ramdisk support was a no-go for me, too. Looking at the sources, it seems
that some necessary constants are missing from the .h file. Wasn't a
problem, though, since NFS-root works well.

Did you find a rpm-mips.tar.gz or a rpm.mips.rpm?  Where?

I was able to cross-compile Pine 3.95 after spending a day wrestling with
its bizarre build mechanism. E-mail me if you are interested in a tarball
or something. Actually, it's pretty useless right now without sendmail.
That my next project =).

Well, I compiled sendmail with some changes to the original source.
Actually, I used the source from Debian 1.2 and applied the included
patch, but I still had to modify a few files.

I put pine, pilot, imapd, and pico in the /usr/bin directory, and they
seem OK. Then I put sendmail in /usr/sbin, where pine expects to find it.
But when I tried to send my first e-mail, it sat at the "sending mail..."
prompt for a while, and then it crashed:

do_page_fault() #2: sending SIGSEGV to pine for illegal writeaccess to
7f7fffe8 (epc == 2aafea6c, ra == 2aafe950)
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 7f7ffd70,
epc == 8001deec
killed

Can you figure anything out from this? Stupidly, I stripped the binaries
=).

newer RedHat versions have a seperate mount SRPM, but AFAIK mount is also
part of the standard util-linux.

Forget my mail about the RedHat mount SRPM. After trying to compile it,
I gave up and looked at linux/Documentation/Changes. The recommended
mount for 2.1.x is mount-2.6g. You can find a compiled version for
Linux/MIPS little endian in the following place:

ftp://ftp.franken.de/pub/people/tsbogend/mips/mount-2.6-mipsel.tar.gz

This is a problem caused by the VFS rewrite since 2.1.43.

I use agetty from the util-linux package. You might have the binaries
on your disk, just change /etc/inittab to use it.

Hi guys

I have a Decstation 5000 240 and am interested in getting Linux up and
running. I have a few questions which I hope you can help with.

1. I have downloaded a distribution which has unpacked as
linux-2.1.14.2.dec is this the latest or most suitable? before I waste a
lot of time with it.

2. I guess I need a linux system on which to compile everything? or is
anything else suitable?

3. Currently my machine has no software at all, I guess the best way to
get it running is to net boot to another machine? I have access to Sun
machines running SunOS 4.13 or Solaris 2.5 will either be suitable?

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards

Tony

First of all Excuse me for the intrusion.
If you don't want to answer I won't bother you again.
I found your E-mail Address into a news message related to M700.
I contacted you as you may have information on this computer.

I managed to find a couple of M700 to be donated to a non profit
organization. The machines where cannibalized.

No RAM - no HD - no CDROM - no Floppy Drive
No Keyboard - no CPU cooling FAN - no scsi cable
NO MANUALS

I managed to find:
	one 2.88meg Floppy, 2 scsi cdroms, two PC keyboards, some 8mb simms =
with parity, one Boot Floppy set (Rather old), a couple of small cooling =
fans for the cpu, two quantum SCSI HD 3.2GB, a scsi cable and a couple =
of scsi terminators.

My problem is that no matter what I install, when I switch on the =
computer, it doesn't boot. The Power led Blinks for one second and then =
it shuts down.
It looks like the PSU doesn't receive the POWER GOOD signal from M/B.
Note: I still have no manual.

Can you help me?

Hey there,

I have one of those damn things too. The odds are that it's not working on
the 8mb simms that you put in there. The place that I got mine from had
nothing but problems getting those size of simms working. They suggested
4/16mb ones instead which I picked 16mb Siemens ones (60ns) and they work
just fine. What rev of floppy do you have. I can probably dd my set for
you and send them down the pipe. By the way, I've tried getting in touch
with Olivetti about manuals and no one seems to know anything about these
boxes. Apparently, they were made with NT in mind and Microsoft dumped
support for them....

Eric

Hi there

I have a DEC system 5000/260, 104 Mb memory, 1,4 Gb SCSI disk, CDrom and
Ethernet. I'm currently using Ultrix 4.5, but I want it to run Linux
.... :-)

Since it's an DEC system it doesn't have a floppy or graphics adapter,
so it must be booted from the CDrom (which is no fun when the MIPS dist
is floppy based ;-) ).

Can I be of some help in the porting project ?

Please write to me on either adresses:

I have been gleefully compiling any packages I've been able to find over
the weekend, since I got a completely SCSI disk-based environment working.
But there are a few things I'm still having trouble with.

For one thing, is there a configuration document for milo? I'd like to
set up the ARC console to boot milo and then boot straight into Linux, but
I don't know what filename to give the linux kernel, or what options to

Also, gdb won't compile from the sources sunsite, complaining that the
target "mipsel-unknown-linux" is not supported. Has anyone made a working
bfd for gdb?

here is the important part of my ARC enviroment:

OSLOADER=scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\milo
OSLOADEFILENAME=vmlinux
OSLOADPARTITION=
OSLOADOPTIONS=-k c:vmlinux
LOADIDENTIFIER=Linux

This loads milo from my 20mb FAT partition and tells it to load
c:vmlinux (also on that FAT partition). If you need more entries,
just add ;<new item> to every enviroment variable. Example:

OSLOADER=scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\milo;scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\milo
OSLOADEFILENAME=vmlinux;vmlinux.ok
OSLOADPARTITION=;
OSLOADOPTIONS=-k c:vmlinux;-k c:vmlinux.ok
LOADIDENTIFIER=Linux;Linux.ok

This printk in the kernel often enoguh solved problems much faster than
GDB - and it even works for kernel bugs. Unfortunately in this case
the output is not very helpful. As it looks libc was segfaulting - but
this doesn't necessariliy mean that it's a libc bug.

I forgot to mention my other question--

is anyone working on a mips64 toolchain?  I don't suppose it's possible
under 2.1.43 to run binaries compiled for mips64el-linux, even if it were
possible to get the compiler working?

I know, I know, 64-bit computing ain't all it's cracked up to be, but I'd
like to be able to brag to people that Linux/MIPS is in the same league
with Linux/Alpha and Linux/Sparc64 =).

The machine no longer runs a FTP server - and it won't do again. What I
made available is some snapshots from the CVS archive on ftp.linux.sgi.com.
Also while we don't have anonymous CVS on that machine running yet the CVS
archive is available for anonymous download in /cvs. The reason why
I never did release an "official" kernel in the last time is that I wanted
to release something that is stable. 2.1.43 is definately not, not on
any architecture.

Anyway - I'll be in California for the next two month and hack on
kernels. More cool news to be announced in the near future - unfortunately
I'm not allowed to speak right now :-(

The binutils still aren't 100% stable for 64bit. Ignoring that it would
be relativly easy to make a 64bit toolset available.

We will. For the time being stability counts higher than a huge address
("Look Ma, my Nitendo still has a Terabyte free") space. With N32 ABI
support being another topic.

X needs a couple of patches. Also we use XFree, not the vanilla X
consortium stuff.

Hi,

I have read your Linux/MIPS FAQ.
We are planning to develop a small embedded System based on Philips'
"one-chip-PDA" PR31500 (R3000 core).
Do you think it will be possible to make Linux/MIPS run on it ?

Best regards,

Christian

You need enough memory and enough 'filestore' (could be flash). But
yes.

But the Philips part (and the similarly-targetted NEC Vr4100 family)
have very poor price/performance compared to their big brothers;

Nope... you can boot from ethernet. Please see the Linux/MIPS DEC web

Hello,

I was wondering if Linux/MIPS would run on a NeTpower MIPS Series 100,
Model #S1010. I know these systems were designed around NT, but I really,
really dislike Micro$oft and am looking for a viable alternative.

Oh, and if so, please put me on the mailing list :)

Unfortunately Linux does not support Netpower. In fact Netpower
refsed to give out any technical data to make a port possible. Currently
there is noone working on a port to their machines.

Charles told me a while back that Ralf was working on a rpm.tar.gz
package, but that his development machine was hosed. Is a new rpm port
underway? Since my Intel box is now inaccessible, I can no longer use
rpm2cpio on that box to untar SRPMs.

Hi there,
I had some time these days to do some work on the DS2100/3100 port.
I found 2 scheduling hazards in the macros SAVEALL and RESTOREALL, after
this fix the memory sizing routine runs well.

Now I got stuck in kernel_entry, when the bss is cleaned. There are two
adresses _edata and _end, which are set by the linker as I understand. On
my machine these are both zero, but they shouldn't be, I think.

I'm not familiar with the linker internals nor with the ecoff file format,
so could some, please, make some suggestions to solve the problem!

Thanks
Frieder

Could you please mail me a patch for the hazards?

Yes, they should not be zero. I suppose the way you are building the
executable is beyond what the binutils can handle. Maybe you should
try to use the elf2ecoff program from Milo. This solved the problems
with the binutils for building Milo; it will probably also solve your
problem. After all it was stolen from the PMAX port of *BSD :-)

Hi Ralf,
I just put in two nop instructions, so I donst send you a full patch!
The file is include/asm/stackframe.h of the 2.1.14 kernel

was:
#define SAVE_ALL
                mfc0 k0, CP0_STATUS; \
                sll  k0, 3; \

now is:
#define SAVE_ALL
                mfc0 k0, CP0_STATUS; \
                nop; \
                sll  k0, 3; \

was:
#define RESTORE_ALL
                mfc0 t0, CP0_STATUS; \
                ori  t0, 0x1f; \

now is:
#define RESTORE_ALL
                mfc0 t0, CP0_STATUS; \
                nop; \
                ori  t0, 0x1f; \

A little bit simplistic, and there is surely a better solution but this
has done the job on my machines.
Thanks for your hint with elf2ecoff, i will give it a try.
