Hi all,

time to break the silence and fill your hard disks ...

I've uploaded little endian binary packages of autoconf-2.12, fileutils-3.12,
ncurses-1.9.9e, binutils-2.7-3, find-4.1, patch-2.1, byacc-1.9, flex-2.5.2,
rcs-5.7, cpio-2.4.2, gcc-2.7.2-4, sed-3.0, cvs-1.8.1, libc-961216,
sh-utils-1.12, diffutils-2.6, m4-1.4, texinfo-3.9, ed-0.2, make-3.75,
textutils-1.17 to ftp.fnet.fr and kernel.panic.julia.de. All
executable files use shared libraries, so make shure you install the
the libc package first. This release moves the shared library stuff
from the experimental stage to usable. Credits for their work on
the MIPS shared object stuff go David S. Miller and Kazumoto Kojima.

For installation just untar these packages into the root of your
system. The old root-0.01.tar.gz package still contains some static
linked binaries which I haven't yet rebuilt and packaged.

I'm also uploading sources of the Linux/MIPS 2.1.14. This release has
many speedups and important bug fixes, so you should upgrade. I've
tested 2.1.14 by compiling kernels in a endless loop for a week, so
it should be halfway reliable ...

All binaries have been compiled for MIPS ISA I targets except the
libc stuff which uses ll/sc instructions for mutexes etc, so
the libc binaries need ISA II (R6000) or better. R3000 people will
have to fix that or recompile without configuring the LinuxThread
add-on into libc.

  Ralf

Hi,
Glad to see there's still life here :-).

This year probably starts good:

Our CS dept. gave me a DS2100 to work on Linux/MIPS.
This machine has 24 MB RAM, a RZ23 hard disk, a VR299 mono monitor
and a terminal attached to a serial port.

So, the first thing I did was to boot Paul's 2.1.1 kernel - without
success :-(. Is it correct that the DS2100 firmware doesn't support
the same calls as the DS5k ? The machine hangs on the very first PROM
call (pmax_printf), so I assume it jumps to the wrong location ...

I took a look at Sprite code but wasn't able to determine what is
wrong.

Btw., I found another interesting thing: a version of Xinu for DS3100 !
This contains some useful bits of code. They use the DZ11 (?) serial
port as console. The code looks quite simple, so I'll try to get a serial
console working on the 2100 during the next days. I'll have to dig through
the Xinu sources a little more, the complete sources are a 12 MB .tar.gz
file !

Hmmm, as the DS2100 is still located at university, I finally found a
way to spend my spare time between lessons (other than reading News ;-)) !

regards,
	Michael Engel	(engel@unix-ag.uni-siegen.de)

Are there pre-built binaries of the latest gcc and binutils for the
SGI platform anywhere? The ftp sites are still using binutils-2.6. I
also couldn't find a prebuilt gcc package for the sparc. If someone
could post this/these tar packages it would help a lot.

Alternatively, I can make my own, but can't figure out how to merge in
the diffs file. Can someone give me the incantation to use with patch
or rcsmerge?

Thanks!

I could build some if you provide me an account.

Using patch do:
gzip -cd gcc-2.7.2.tar.gz | tar xf -
gzip -cd gcc-2.7.2-1.diff.gz | patch -p0

then configure and build the compiler. Don't forget to install the
float.h from the ftp-server over the one installed by the compilation
procedure into <prefix>/lib/gcc-lib/<target>/<version>/include/float.h.
And do only build the C, C++ and Objective-C compiler, *not* protoize/
unprotoize.

Hi all,

I'm releasing some more binary packages. As usual just untar them into
your machine's root for installation. They're available on
kernel.panic.julia.de or on ftp.fnet.fr as soon as they have been moved
online there.

The new version of the binutils fixes the broken .previous pseudo for
MIPS using ELF. Also ld was dumping core in binutils-2.7-3 when linking
certain programs like insmod.

As you may have guessed from that I now have loadable modules working,
something which the device driver writers will love.

Hello guys!

First I'd like to ask about the status of the DECstation port. Also,
I'd like to mention that my DECstation just got a nice boost today. It
appears Digital was unable to sell some SIMMs, so a guy in our lab just
gave me 64Mb - putting them in I now have 96Mb. I think it would be a
wonderful platform to play with once the kernel starts running on this
machine (which is a R4000, and doesn't get as far during the boot).

Subject: making a BIG ENDIAN root disk

Hi all,

Our work porting linux-mips to run on top of the SimOS machine
simulator is coming along well. The kernel is pretty much ready, and
now it's time to get a root disk image together. Note that we are
simulating a big endian machine.

I looked in:

        ftp.fnet.fr:/linux-mips/filesys

and found the little endian version of the filesystem (is this up to
date?). I need a big endian version of this image. Does anyone have
this?

If not, does someone have the source tree (and makefile) from which
the complete root disk (binaries and configuration files) can be
made. While we're on the subject, I assume that there is a "mkfs"
program available somewhere so that I can make my own filesystems...

Thanks for the help. Once we get this all together I think it will
help make linux-mips development much easier!

Sounds good!

I *think* that one is up to date in the sense of being still useable with
a mipsel-linux machine. It is however not useable with an big endian
machine because it contains little endian ELF binaries.

Get the exfsprogs package from tsx-11.mit.edu in
/pub/linux/packages/ext2fs. This is exactly what I'm using, just that I've
built an older version.

If you made your homeworks right you should be able to create an ext2
filesystem on any big or little endian machine and SimOS running Linux/MIPS
should be able to mount, read and write it.

All a minimal root filesystem needs is /bin/sh. For testing purposes you
don't even need to install a real shell there; I used an assembler written
hello world ... Then you need a /dev/ directory. In order to create that
use the /dev/MAKEDEV script found on your nearest Linux machine. Or even
easier - take the image from ftp.fnet.fr and just replace the binaries on
it.

Hi all,

I've uploaded more binaries to kernel.panic.julia.de and ftp.fnet.fr.
The usual install instructions apply.

The binutils release is worth some extra words - I've switched to HJ Lu's
source tree from the vanilla FSF/Cygnus source tree. I don't take myself
to build cross compiler binaries of 2.7.0.6-1 because my patches will
be integrated into HJ Lu's next release which I except for the next days,
maybe even still today.

Highlights in 2.7.0.6-1 are support for the MIPS16 instruction set used
by the TinyRISC series of CPUs and better support for 64 bit ELF on MIPS.

Hi all,

as you have seen I've uploaded several binary packages which together
almost form a useable Linux distribution for little endian systems.
Maintaining a couple of tarballs is a lot of work for both the person
who does the packaging and the sysadmin as user of the package, so
I want to switch to a real distribution.

For me the only two options are Debian and RedHat. Anyway, I'd like
to let _you_ people out there the choice, so mail me what you prefer.
Use your chance or I'll flip a coin ...

Ok, no need to flip a coin. The clear winner is RedHat; I received just
a single vote for Debian. What I didn't expect was that I would
initiate a little flame bait in which specially Debian friends were
active.

Video cards for Magnums are rare. In fact, if you should find a source
for them you should really post it here. I however have recently seen
a posting to comp.sys.mips which I quote here:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In article <dz6819iuay.fsf@puma.inmos.co.uk>, rji@puma.inmos.co.uk (Richard Ingr
am) says:

At last check MIPS remarketing wanted $1100 for the graphics and mouse/audio car
d together.

Hi -

I am looking for up-to-date status on the LINUX/MIPS port. We
are interested in getting LINUX running on our MIPS processor families
(3000, 4000 and 5000) and would be willing to submit our development
results for inclusion. Here are some of the questions we have:

     ?	Supported MIPS processors
     ?	32 and 62 bit support
     ?	Big-endian and little-endian support
?	Network, serial and storage drivers available

I look forward to hearing from you ...

The config disk is available on ftp.fnet.fr:/linux-mips/. Not an image
but a pkzip archive from which you can build the config file just follow
the included documentation.

Once again my posting about video cards (the third time I send it out
today ...):

Video cards for Magnums are rare. In fact, if you should find a source
for them you should really post it here. I however have recently seen
a posting to comp.sys.mips which I quote here:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In article <dz6819iuay.fsf@puma.inmos.co.uk>, rji@puma.inmos.co.uk (Richard Ingr
am) says:

At last check MIPS remarketing wanted $1100 for the graphics and mouse/audio car
d together.

Another source is:

Another possibility is that I have an extra one I am holding as a warranty spare

no longer need after April 1, 1997

Well, I'd be very happy to help you to port Debian.
The problem aren't the volunteers (we're plenty of, here, even too
many), but the hardware: there aren't MIPS 'round here (as far that I
can see).

If you think I could be useful anyway, please don't hesitate to whistle.

[Resending - many apologies if you have had this message before, but
I still haven't had it sent back to me from the list]

We have some P-4032 boards returned from a customer who's finished
their development, and I'd be happy to give some away in the hope of
getting some software ported. I guess we could make up to three
available to Linux people.

Just to remind you, the P-4032 consists of:

o Vr4300-133 CPU (a full R4x00 instruction set, FP and MMU).
o two regular PCI bus slots.
o Ethernet, SCSI, 2xRS232, Centronics, Keyboard, NVRAM/Calendar all
  onboard.

Full details on our web site (www.algor.co.uk) or just download the
manual (postscript) and print it.

We can supply or point you at sample drivers for all the onboard
devices.

Are you a candidate for this self-interested generosity? The choice
will depend on questions like this:

o I guess the more experienced hackers would get Linux up and running
with perhaps 10-20 days effort. Can you get to within a factor of
  three of this?

o Do you have some 'leisure' available to devote to this project?

o Do you have a specific interest in 'embedded' features? eg diskless
operation, operation with remote console, operation (including reboot)
  with unpredictable levels of attention...

Let me know.

Hi Dom,

Still any interest in an OpenBSD port? Or is it Linux only that counts?

Wanna take a bet on how fast i can do an OpenBSD port? 24hrs? :-)

Iff I didn't currently have other priorities I'd take that challenge.
RM200 to the first shell prompt (including sleep & unpacking :-) was
46h. Had to be fast, because my Acer broke a few days before last year's
Linux Kongress in Berlin ...

I think we should somewhen meet in Sweeden for that :-)

(Aside of that every little bit of CPU I can get hold of is currently
configured to brute force RC5, not to compile. Who want's to donate

Speaking about hardware, did anyone respond to the message from the guy at
IDT the other day? Seems like there more interest around from companies
these days to get Linux running on their boards..

Bah! It doesn't count! It was to similar to what you had before. (Acer) ;-)
I had my Tyne running diskless after only a couple of hours hacking.
Brag brag!! ;-)

BTW, Xfree86 3.2A will have a server that work with OpenBSD on the PICA
and on the TYNE. Do you have anything working with Linux yet? Otherwise
perhaps you can use something from that stuff. So far i have only made
it work with S3 type boards as that is the only stuff i have.

Anyway, keep up the good hacking Ralf!

  - I still don't have any docs about the RM200.
  - It takes my good 'ol 486 an hour to build a kernel :-)

(That's like Bodybuilders & posing, just for programmers :-)

I haven't even switched on my Acer for quite some time ...

It's some month since I put my fingers on some X hacking for M700, but
I stopped due to lack of time.

I'm considering buying a:

MIPS Magnum 4000PC-50 "Barebone" System

ARCSystem

Includes:

     50 Mhz RISC processor included
     Case
     Power Supply
     Motherboard
     Ethernet Card
     Audio Card

will linux support this?
(What devices will it support. ie SCSI, IDE ? )
Any information you have will be helpful.

Thanks

I have the X server compiled on my rPC44 now, but the kernel support
is lacking the mmap for my machine, so this list may grow some soon!
Not too soon, since I just landed a fulltime consulting gig that makes
me go to their office for several hours a day. However, it is better
than starving :-).

Hopefully this gig will buy me some breathing room to get X up on my
OpenBSD box (the rPC44) as well as some time to revisit Linux/MIPS.

Anyway, I'm glad to see traffic on this list again.

hi,

I have an older mips box (Prime Computers) and for what i've heard
the company stopped supporting the hardware. My question is : 'Can
linux run on this 'probably' costumary system. For all i know it runs
on a MIPS 3000/3300 but i'm not sure coz i last used it 2 yrs. ago.

I've only had a chance to get to know linux briefly but from what i've
seen it's a more than allright system, still i wonder if there's a solid
software-base around. I know about compilers and some text-editors.
But what about Word-processors, Graphics-systems and also Entertainment.
By the way is there some kind of linux hardware-platform ? If there
isn't i guess a MIPS/CPU wouldn't be such a 'bad' choice.

I've been a WIN/TEL user for a 'to' long time i guess, got to spoiled
by that 'massive' software base. I can still remember having A LOT more
fun using an old DAI/computer wich ran faster than the first XT/pc's.
For all i know the past years sometimes seem a P.ersonal C.atastrophy if
i only look back at all the trouble the WIN/TEL duo put me thru.

So, if you can send me somea mail about a PRIME COMPUTERS
MIPS R3000/3300 software i'd really appreciate that.

Hi,

I found a minor profiling bug in the code generator of GCC 2.7.2.
When generating PIC code for a MIPS target the generated code
will not save/restore the GP register for the call to _mcount
for leaf functions (which due to the implicit call to _mcount
aren't really leaf functions) and make the assembler issue
warnings. Tried on mipsel-linux target but should apply to
all MIPS ELF targets which don't use the 64bit ABI.

The test code which demonstrates this bug is:

foo()
{
}

compilation command used is "gcc -O2 -p -c -o test.o test.c".

Hi again,

I sort of mentioned this a while ago, but I need a more exact answer
this time. As mentioned, I need to make a BIG ENDIAN root disk to use
with the latest linux-mips kernel. As a reminder, we ported it to be
big endian for our SimOS machine simulation. I'm aware that you can
just put anything in /bin/sh for initial testing purposes. Is this
just automatically exec'ed or something early in the boot?

Anyway, I want a complete root disk (with /etc, /dev, include files,
etc.). I see on all of the ftp sites that there is a root-0.01.tar.gz
in the little endian filesys directory. Where did this come from? I
want to create the exact same thing for the big endian root disk and I
obviously don't have a big endian system to use exfsprogs on. Is there
a complete source tree somewhere that I can just make?

You mentioned that MAKEDEV script. How does this work into the
creation of the root disk. Is it something I do before running the
exfs stuff?

Thanks,
Steve
