Hi folks,

The 4Mb 72pin simms with parity finally arrived for the second-hand
Magnum 4000SC-50 that I have. I've popped them in and it now gets
much further along in the boot process! :-)

The machine does not have the Magnum video card, and I cannot get anything
out of either of the serial ports. Which one am I supposed to use
as a console? How do I get it to spit things at the serial ports?

The machine does have the ethernet/serial card and the audio/mouse
card. I believe the machine was previously used to boot RISC/OS, and
used the serial ports as console. I have the Magnum setup disk goo
(thanks Ralf) though I don't think that will work without a video card.
I also have a flash-rom burner, so I can use that to reset the firmware.

Any help from you experienced Magnum types would be appreciated. You
may have guessed I have no doco...

Regards,
Paul

Hi all,

last night I finally found time to try Paul's 2.0.7 kernel on my DS5000/200
(haven't tried the 5000/120 yet).

It comes as far as
Initialising time ...

(init/main.c l. 773)
and hangs.

By looking through the startup code I came across some things that
I didn't understand ... I'm still waiting for my copy of Kane's
"MIPS RISC architecture" book
(our library has it, but it's currently loaned to s.o. else :().

I think most of my questions will be answered when I get better knowledge
of the MIPS instruction set ...

But, one question remains ...

- Am I correct in assuming that the boot monitor already sets up a
  virtual->physical address mapping ? In dec_entry.S a commenct reads

 * Now we need to move exception vector handler routines that appear
 * in head.S down to the right addresses, 'cos the DECStation loads
 * kernels at 0x80030000... <sigh>

  Afaik, the physical address space goes from 0x0 to 512 MBytes, so the
  0x80030000 should be a virtual address. Or did I get sth. wrong there ?

...as all good kernels should! I know it's not as impressive as a full
boot, but that's as far as I've got in writing code. The major milestone
it represents is that the DECstation code is finally back into a
mainstream kernel release (or it will be once I give Ralf my patches!)

You really need a copy of this, though there is a half-way decent
description of the R3000 architecture in the DEC documentation.

Yep!

Probably, though we don't care what it is.

No, it's the physical address 0x0003000 in what's called KSEG0 which is
main memory unmapped but cached. KSEG1 at 0xA0000000 is the same memory
both unmapped and uncached, which is useful for accessing device registers.

KUSEG addresses start at 0x00000000 and are mapped via the TLB (i.e.
virtual) and cached. The MIPS CPU's just work this way - and once you
get used to it, it's pretty easy and very useful!

Regards,
Paul

Well, yes, but no. Let's stick to 32-bit addresses for now (that
works even on 64-bit MIPS CPUs):

The MIPS CPU doesn't have a switch to turn memory translation on and
off. Instead it breaks virtual addresses down into regions:

  0x0000 0000 -> 0x7fff ffff  "kuseg" - user-accessible, translated
  0x8000 0000 -> 0x9fff ffff  "kseg0" - cached window to physical 0->512Mbyte
  0xA000 0000 -> 0xbfff ffff  "kseg1" - uncached window to phys 0->512Mbyte
  0xc000 0000 -> 0xffff ffff  "kseg2" - kernel-only, translated

A unix kernel therefore runs in program addresses from 0x8000 0000
upwards, where it can run cached without translation overhead.

Then the MIPS architecture puts its exception vectors (trap entry
points) down at 0x8000 0000 and nearby.

DEC must be doing something with the bottom 192Kbytes of
memory.... but that's there problem.

You need the MIPS book. But if you can handle Adobe PDF ("acrobat")
format, I think IDT still have the "3051 family software manual"
online; and it covers most of this stuff (I guess I should admit
having written most of it). It's at:

Yeah - the DEC boot proms make use of the 128K above the first 64k
as space for variables. At the moment we need to use the boot prom
code for printing to the console, so we leave it free. Later we can
make use of it, but first we must write some device drivers.

Paul

In fact the R4000 port is using them for now. So far the only addresses
used outside the 4GB 32bit address space are hardware addresses.

The size of the KSEG0 segment of 512mb also limits currently the
maximum addressable RAM space to currently 512mb. I volunter to fix
that immediately if someone borrows me a gig of RAM for testing ;-)

Hi Eugen,

still haven't received the papers from the university. Hopefully
the person responsible will be back tomorrow. Today here is
public holiday ...

You should also try to make shure that you have a newer edition of the
Kane. The newer releases also cover the R6000 and R4000 and go more
into the details than the first edition that I'm using.

The KSEG0/KSEg1 mappings are wired in the hardware and not setup by the firmware.

You might save these first 192kb to some safe place such that you can
later swap them again into their old place and make use of the firmware -
if that's of interest. Best place would be somewhere in the swap
space on disk if available.

That machine has probably also some jumpers on the motherboard which sets
it to serial console/G364 console/G364 console and ignore errors during
self test.

Have fun with that procude. I never did it myself and I wouldn't
wonder if other hardware than just the firmware flash-rom would need
to be reprogrammed, too. You might post about this reprogramming
procedure to comp.sys.mips which also the some Mips people like Greg
Shippen who constructed that machine are reading.

Not that I can see... but I'll have another look.

I take it this is still without Paul's DEC patches, right?

Hopefully this will be ready soon. For now my DECstation 5000/150 (R4000)
does not boot with his 2.0.7 when compiled as R3000. It gets stuck in
sys_cacheflush() somewhere. I mean that it does not boot to the same point
where a R3000 DECstation would.

I saw you rewrote most of that code, so that's what I am waiting for.

Yes, I rewrote this part of the code. It was simply nightmarish bad; I
implemented it in the very beginnings of Linux/MIPS where a version of
it-somehow-works-quality was sufficient but I really had to fix that. I
think I should explain it a bit.

In the old code sys_cacheflush(addr, size, flags) was both the syscall
cacheflush as well as the routine that was called from within the kernel.
The implementation did always flush the entire cache which is a
chainsaw massacre to the performance as it flushed the data cache about
90000 times and the I-cache about 25000 times when booting with a minimal
/etc/rc and no init. The implementation was also buggy as it flushed the
caches many times each times called.

In the new code sys_cacheflush() is only the syscall entry. sys_cacheflush()
verifies it's parameters for validity and calls cacheflush(). Note that
cacheflush() is not a function but a pointer to a function. Thus the
calling sequence from assembler is

#include <asm/regdef.h>
#include <asm/asm.h>
#include <asm/cache.h>

	...
	LONG_L	v0,cacheflush
	jalr	v0
	...

and from C

#include <asm/cache.h>

	cacheflush(...);

Directly calls to sys_cacheflush() are no longer allows; instead call
cacheflush().  The prototype of cacheflush()

  cacheflush(unsigned long addr, unsigned long size, unsigned int flags)

are similar to the old sys_cacheflush(). The flags parameter can be:

  CF_DCACHE   Flush the data cache
  CF_ICACHE   Flush the instruction cache
  CF_BCACHE   like (CF_DCACHE | CF_ICACHE)
  CF_VIRTUAL Flush only virtual indexed caches like R4000 and better.
  CF_PHYSICAL FLush only physical indexed caches like R2000, R3000, R6000.
              The differenciation between virtual and physical cache improves
              performance most for R3000 machines.
  CF_ALL      like (CF_VIRTUAL | CF_PHYSICAL).

More flags to come.

The actual cacheflush implementation is CPU model dependand as On MIPS the
special situation that several different implementations of CPU caches
exist. The CPU type dependand initialization in arch/mips/kernel/setup.c
and arch/mips/mips[1-4]/ take care of selection of the right routines.

Well, we guys with the DECstations are waiting to see a kernel that boots
all the way to actually load /etc/rc, and it seems like there's quite a
way to go.

Thanks. I'll take a look see what I can learn.

Hello!
I may be able to get my hands on an SGI R5000 Indy (blueish case), and
am interested in running Linux on it. I don't know much about MIPS
hardware, but am willing to learn and am quite knowledgeable about i386
HW. (As I write, I am working on Cyrix 6x86 patches for Linux 2.1)

Could you please assist me in finding:
	Linux/MIPS kernel sources & necessary program binaries (e.g. sh)
	i386/MIPS gcc cross development tools
	Hardware documentation (for R5000 and for Indy)
	the Linux/MIPS mailing list

Also, how would I boot such a system? I believe it is on an ethernet
with some i386 computers, I would rather not have to use netboot as they
run Windows 95, not Linux.

Thanks very much.

Hi there,
I have a DecStation 5100. As far as I know it has a MIPS R3k processor.
Is there any chance of Linux supporting it? It has a SCSI tape drive and
currently no disks.. ( although I aquired a VAXstation 3100 at the same
time which has two disks... We'll have to see whats happening with
NetBSD for that one, butI may be able to steal one of the disks out of
it.) Im not really up for Kernel hacking and stuff, my C is a bit rusty
:) I may (will) be able to provide a mirror site as soon as I have a
machine to put up ( workign for a large ISP...). I currently have an
overclocked 486 150Mhz at home running linux.

Sorry, but I haven't been following this mailing list too much
lately. Hopefully someone can help me.

What is the final status of the work David Miller did this summer? I
am interested in getting the code and porting it to run on top of the
SimOS machine simulation environment (which models the hardware of
SGI's).

Thanks for any info,
Steve Herrod

Hi Simon!

	Is that a DecSTATION or a DecSYSTEM? (Ie is it a workstation,
or a server box?) If it is the second, then welcome to the club! I too
have a DECsystem 5100 which is anxiously awaiting the MIPS port.

	Paul Antoine is the owner of the DECstation port -- you'll probably
hear from him too. So far his test kernels don't run on this box - they
register dump immediately after network download. I would be curious to
see what results you get on your box -- maybe we could compare register
dumps :-)

	Seriously though. I for one appreciate all the work done so far. I'm
hoping to start digging into the kernel soon too - I now have a setup
where I have some space to do it, if I can only find the time. It will
be good to have another box to test on, if you're game.

I noticed that the nintendo 64 uses a customized R4000 running
at 94Mhz. I hope by customized, it still has a MMU but i dont
know how to find out.

If linux could be ported to this platform, make no under-estimation
that it would be the most popular.

The Nintendo uses a die which is also shipped as the Vr4300 CPU, which
is indeed a cheapo R4000 complete with MMU and floating point
hardware. It's possible that the Nintendo version doesn't bring out
some critical signals, I suppose. Also, I don't know whether the MMU
gets *tested* on parts shipped to Nintendo.

The challenge would be to get some usable I/O... Linux without a
keyboard or any kind of disk might not be so interesting.

Additional I/O hardware is available in a development kit for most
game consoles.

Sorry, no. Best ask Nitendo or whoever manufactures that stuff.
AFAIK Nitendo is pretty restrictive with giving out technical,
information. So trying to get such a kit might become difficult.

> The sony playstation can be had for about $100 around here. And I have

Sony Praystation is R3000 with some matrix stuff added in cp2. Supposedly
no FPU and no idea yet about full TLB hardware. Someone on this list is
currently reverse engineering that beast.

The NES doesn't use MIPS CPUs but a integrated variant of the MOS 65816,
the 16 bit successor of the 6502. That CPU is trivial that you don't
really need an assembler for small projects (a9 37 85 01 4c e2 fc ... :-)

What is the status of the DEC port...
what tools work with the DEC port... What needs to be done.

Thanks.

The DECstation/R3000 port is in the very beginnings. Look on the
web pages at http://lena.fnet.fr/. There is some DECstation related
link with more information what currently exists. That page is
maintained by Paul Antoine who did the most of what yet exists for
DECstations.

The Linux/MIPS tools are available via ftp at lena.fnet.fr:/linux-mips.
Installing them from sources only is a bit tricky but there are also
Linux binaries available.

Do you wish to be subscribed to the Linux/MIPS mailing list?

More practically, complain to postmaster@htp.net - according to my
'traceroute' small Long Island based providers htp.net wire up
the benighted souls of "owlmaster".
