The HP CE boxes are, I believe, SH-3 based. You could take one apart
and see what is on the chips inside :-).
If you really want a CE-like box, you might want to consider the
Tosheba Libretto. The 50CT runs like $1400ish and the 70CT runs
$1900ish. The 50CT is a P75 machine with 16M of RAM, PCMCIA, IRDA and
a few extra goodies. The keyboard is smaller than normal, but works
great. FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD all run flawlessly on it, so I
don't see why Linux/i386 wouldn't work as well. The hardware is
basically documented.
The CE boxes are going to be *HARD* to support because they typically
use custom hardare for everything. Check out the netbsd tech-kern
archives at http://www.netbsd.org for a recent discussion on the
difficulties in doing this.
